Hi! I am trying to find some schools that might give me merit scholarships. I also am on the lookout for reach schools, but I am not sure what acceptance rate would be the cutoff for a realistic shot at a selective school. I really cannot afford anything over 40,000 a year and unfortunately my family would not recieve any financial aid.
Here are my stats:
1340 SAT, 700 R+W and 640 M (second try)
4.0 unweighted GPA (I’m not sure how valuable this actually is in bolstering my application)
4.25 weighted GPA
Here are factors that I consider important in a college:
East coast (preferrably not too urban)
Not too big, but also not so small to the point where the majors are limited. I’m open to liberal arts colleges too because I have always been a fan of the arts.
Internship opportunities
I’m not exactly sure what I would like to major in yet, but I am considering environmental science / studies, economics, or something related.
you may want to lookup what an LAC actually is.
There are lots of places that you should be able to get under 40k/year. Especially if you start moving off the coast. You are in the range of getting Miami University(OH) in the 40k range. The MidWest also has a lot of LACs (e.g. Lawrence, Beloit, etc.) that would be in your range.
I am definetly open to midwest schools too - especially if it would save me money. Ideally, I would like to attend somewhere that would cost me ~30k, but obviously, I would need scholarship money. The further out from my home state (MD) I go, the more money I will need for travel expenses.
4.0 unweighted GPA (all A grades) in hard courses is very valuable in applying to colleges.
If you live in Maryland, why not consider the Maryland public universities?
I am looking into UMD and UMBC, but as a free-spirited teenager I am also interested in a change of scenery. Of course, my budget will ultimately determine my school so there is a good chance that’s where I’ll end up.
I would look at Muhlenberg- you might be able to get some merit $ from them.
$40k will get you a number of schools. Start looking at the merit awards. I’m trying to find money for a cousin at the $10-15K range with your stats and it’s very challenging
1350 anad 3.4 GPA got my D $30k from Roanoke, which brought net price down to about $30k.
Another plug for Roanoke College in Salem, VA. Son a rising senior. 1280 SAT 3.35 UW GPA got him $28K in merit $$$.
