I still don't understand how colleges view SAT scores. Will they combine only math and verbal scores and view writing as SAT II? Or, will they just combine all three sections and draw a parallel to 1600 on old SAT? Or, do they just look at the combined score of New SAT?

A lot of colleges. particularly many state schools, will be looking mainly at the SAT score without writing to determine admission. Georgetown is among some private schools that will also be ignoring writing. Many will be considering writing and the entire score but none has actually been clear on what they will do except to say that this year they will be looking at the writing section cautiously because they do not have a track history with it yet.

I heard Columbia looks at your M+CR and takes your writing as an SAT II test.

Where did you hear this?

There was an article in Barrons that noted a handful of top schools and their position on the new SAT. Notably Harvard & Stanford are looking at the new test w/ all sections equal. MIT, Chicago, & GTown are ignoring it completely. Other schools are looking at it but w/ less emphasis, such as Dartmouth.

stambliark, what did that article say on columbia, yale and upenn (if you happen to remember)?

the listing shows how colleges consider writing.

i think that 1500 looks a lot better than 2250 because the test was much harder back then and 1500 was tougher to pull than 2250 is now.

The test was not much harder "back then." College Board has stated many times that the old verbal and math sections are scored comparably to the new critical reading and math sections.

sucko, my math/verbal is a 1500 but my total is a 2200 which doesn't equate to a 1500 by conversion.

uhhh, you guys are crazy, this test is WAAYYYY harder than the old SAT. Way harder.......waaaayy. Old SAT was ez stuff.

lots of people got 1600 back then. there aren`t a lot of people that get 2400.

I'm hoping that some of those colleges that ignore writing do so again next year...it would really help my 2300 (800CR, 790M, 710W). I know it doesn't make too much of a difference, but i like my 1590 :p

Haha I wish writing would just be ignored...I'd have that 1600.

Edit: According to Kaplans, Yale will be giving "no weight" to the Writing section :D

id like my 1500 but instead im stuck with this terrible 2180

A while ago I hated the writing section and hoped schools didn't look at it much. But after I got 800 Writing, I would rather that they did weigh it equally. ;) I am just selfish I guess.

You guys should just prepare for the writing section. It is definitely the easiest section to study for; I mean, how hard can it be to memorize a few grammatical rules and test patterns. I think the writing MC part is the easiest section, and I didn't ever learn grammar in school. That essay can be a bi*** though, but it is still possible to overcome (I went from a 7 to an 11).

I don't know how I got a 710....I guess I wasn't really focused on the MC. On the PSAT I got an 80, so I think I was overconfident on the SAT. I ended up getting a 70/80 and a 10.
