SAT dilemma, if you help, you are the man!

Hey guys,

My old SAT was 1480 (790 M and 690 V)
My old SAT II Writing was 640

-I have great SAT IIS - 800,790,790,760,720

But I may want to take the new SAT because of the emphasis on writing.
Do you think that if I study really hard just for writing to get a 750+ but do bad on writing and ok on math, colleges will just use the composite scores.
For example, say I get a 600 on CR and like a 720 on Math but a 760 on Writing.

Could colleges say that I got a 790+690+760 overall? = 2240. I mean if they do this, my SAT IIs and SAT will be provide a strong standarized basis. The thing is, I only have time to strengthen the writing portion and not worry about anything else.

In addition, could you suggest really amazing writing books and Critical reading test-prep books? That is the ones that got you the perfect scores through a lot of review..

yes they use the composite scores but it's debatable as to whether or not they acknowledge the other low scores.

it is possible to imrpove to a 760, but it may be harder than you think. the curve on the new SAT writing is much more brutal than the old SAT II.

I would definitely focus on the verbal section over the writing, as it has been stated on CC many times that most colleges are taking the writing score with a grain of salt since this is the first year they've been available as part of the SAT I.

yeah I heard about that but thats only tecchy schools like MIT, caltech. The point of the New SAT is to emphasize the writing skills into one complete package to judge the student on.

bump

please

Virtually all of the colleges say that they will use the highest scores. So that would suggest that there is no harm in taking the New SAT. Your math is excellent and it is unlikely that it will drop significantly. Check out the "Official Essay Thread" for a very nice collection of sample essays. They should be very helpful. But Stambliark41 has a very good point. The scales on the New SAT are really brutal. For example, I missed two on the Verbal and got a 790. A 790 is a good score but this would have been an 800 on any of the old SATs. And the math scale has been really brutal. Check out the current threads on CC and you will see.

yeah thats the thing, I know the curves are brutal and thats why i feel like math and CR are hard to control. I only want to focus my study on Writing so I am hoping that a high score in writing is the only improvement they would like to see and use the old SAT scores to combine with.

thanks

bump it up

unless your old SAT scores are only high b/c you prepped a ton, I think you have nothing to worry about in your math & reading. Since it will be like a yr later, you should do equally well in the math & may even surprise yourself in the reading.

For example, I'm really good at the math part. I got 790 in March, & all I did to prep for math for June was to take ~3 more full length practice tests. I got 800 math in June. You should take at least a couple full length tests anyway, so that is all you should need to keep yourself fresh on the sections you are less concerned about.

well, writing is really important. Maybe CR too

bump bump bump, b2k, pdiddy, fabolous, bump my post
