17th Avenue Hall: What is it like?

I’ve been admitted to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for Fall 2015, and I’m trying to figure out where to live. I’m looking to stay in a dorm, preferably one that doesn’t have a lot of partying. What is 17th avenue like?

Thanks!!!

I cannot comment on the personality of 17th ave, but here is a link from the UMN website:

17th is the Greek dorm; Superblock has a lot of parties; I don’t know about Bailey. Middlebrook and Comstock are almost always quiet.

Comstock is calm and centrally located. I recommend it for all freshmen who want a little more quiet, but also want to be close to all that goes on on-campus.

Middlebrook is calm, but on the fringes on West Bank. Great for art/music/theater/business majors, or for those who want to ensure enough walking to keep off the freshman 15.

Bailey is as quiet as a retirement home. Being on St.Paul campus, I only recommend it for upper division students in CFANS or other St.Paul program who know they want to avoid all the campus buzz.

17th is nice- being the newest dorm, but there will be parties, especially on game day (which is most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays). The Superblock (Territorial, Pioneer, Centennial and Frontier) is party-central.

17th is wonderful. I currently live in 17th. Feel free to ask me anything.

What are the pros and cons of living on 17th versus any of the superblock dorms?

IMHO, the biggest is cosmetic, but not insignificant: 17th is new and looks it. The superblock definitely show their age in places though everything works fine and is clean.

17th is convenient to Dinkytown and the sports arenas. Superblock is close to Stadium Village and light rail (to get to either downtown).

17th has its own dining hall, the Superblock has two that are shared between two of the dorms (not a big deal, but some might care).

17th is on some very busy streets you’ll have to cross to get to class (though most students ignore this anyway). Superblock, you can walk to class and only cross Washington- which is no where near as busy as it used to be.

(sorry- double entry)

@transfergopher does 17th have a lot of parties or opportunities to meet new people? My roommate and I have it as our top choice for next year, but I’m worried about missing out on the social/party experiences that come with being a first year student if we are not living on the superblock. I’m not a huge partier, but I would like the option to go out when I feel like it

@SavannahSimms24‌ One floor is totally reserved for a fraternity, one floor is totally reserved for a sorority, and one wing is reserved for students interested in greek life. There are less (really lame) dorm parties but there are way more people who you can befriend and can put you on the list for greek parties.
