So I applied to 4 UC’s (Irvine, San Diego, Riverside, and UCLA) I’m typically an A-B student with mostly A’s. But my first semester of senior year was horrible. I took 5 AP classes. I received 2 A’s, 3 B’s, and the most devastating one, 1 D. It was in Physicis C Mechanics AP. I’ve only received 1 C throughout high school so this is very uncommon for me and I’m worried. I will talk to my counselor and notify the colleges but how much does this hurt my chances? I’m sure that’s UCLA is out of the question now but what about the rest? And does the class itself matter, I plan on majoring in CS and physics isn’t really an important class for it. And finally, what do I do from here, retake it next semester and try to improve or not take the risk and change the class.
A D Senior year could jeopardize any of the UC acceptances not just UCLA. UCR might be the most lenient. Each UC will review your application on a case by case basis, so there is no way to know the outcome. All you can do is report the grade deficiency and hope for a much better grade 2nd semester along with the UC’s understanding this was a one time occurrence.
For CS, most schools require you take a Physics course or two so having that background will help you in college. If possible, I would try to retake that semester but it has to be the exact same course for the UC’s to recognize the repeat grade. If you can show the UC’s that you are repeating the course, this would help your chances.
If possible, I would try to stick with the class, hire a tutor and get some extra help from your teacher.
