Hey everyone,
I am looking to transfer to UCSD/UCSB for CompSci for the Fall of 2015, I will have over 60 semester units, IGETC completed and most likely a 3.8+ GPA after Spring 2015 . I was just wondering how these two UC's will consider pre-reqs when it comes to transfering. On Assist UCSD advises me to complete certain courses while UCSB requires me to complete the following courses.

For UCSD how does missing two pre reqs (Linear Algebra and Intro to Discrete Mathematics) affect my chances of being admitted?

For UCSB I was just wondering if I have to complete all the required courses to transfer to UCSB. Cause if I did I would have to spend another year at CC for just two classes Math 4A and 4B or Linear Algebra and Differential Equations... Is it even worth trying to apply this coming November?

Also can I just get admitted into the campus and finish the pre reqs for my major/apply undeclared( I heard they barely accept people who go undeclared)? And do they just consider my fall GPA?

This is also the same issue I have with UCLA and UCB as they come 3rd/4th of where I want to go since I would have to spend an extra year at CC for like two math classes... I guess 1 class a semester isnt that bad xD

You cannot apply as an undeclared transfer to a UC! You have a better chance of admittance when completing all the prereqs. CS is a highly competitive major.

Yeah it’s true, you can’t apply undeclared as a transfer.

As far as pre reqs go, it’s hard to know if you have a shot without some of them or not. I don’t think anyone knows for sure, until admissions starts comparing you with other applicants. I think it’s worth a shot though. You’re not able to finish them next semester?

Im taking the classes that are needed to take the two math classes next semester and this semester! It just sucks when I think that I would have to spend another two semesters taking only two classes to finish all my lower division classes.

I think missing Discrete will hurt you more than Linear, since Discrete math is tied a little more closely to CS, unless you’re into specific areas like graphics or machine learning. But I’d say apply and see, even if you’re missing both of those. If you get in, good for you, problem solved. If not, well, re-evaluate your options and see what else you can take until next year, maybe even take pre-reqs for other UCs and apply to more than just those two schools.

Or if there’s room in your schedule and you’re strong in math, you could ask your current math teacher if it’d be feasible to take one of those classes concurrently with whatever you’re taking next semester. They should have a good idea of what the course covers and how necessary those pre-reqs really are for your school. But be careful not to take on too much at once, math can be hard both conceptually and in terms of workload.

If you apply this year and end up deciding to stay at CC another year, are there other classes you could take? Obviously you’ll have the two maths, would you be able to take GE requirements, or “strongly recommended” classes to help you after transfer? Any requirement you take at CC is one less class to worry about at UC, after all. :)

Is there 1 UC that you have met the required classes if so you should TAG asap. The deadline ends in 3 days. I wanted to TAG to a UC but I forgot about the math deadline so I have to apply without the guarantee.
