IT'S OFFICIAL!!!!! I'M COMING TO MCGILL! can anyone help me with the course selection? I'm gonna be in the BSc Freshman program and I'm hoping to do a major or honors program in physiology with a minor in management. so I checked online and my AP credits have exempted me from Chem 110 and 120, Math 140 and 141, Physics 131 and 142, Math 203 and 3 random credits for macroeconomics. So far, I'm required to only take Bio 111 and 112. Now, I also want to take Math 222 and Chem 212 which is organic chem 1. there's a lab that goes with chem 212. does that count as a separate course or do they go together? in other words, am i automatically signed up for the lab as soon as i sign up for the lecture. do i have to take english and social studies every year? and also i was tooking at the honors program in physiology, am i required to take all the courses that are listed for each year or is that just the courses that are available to take? cause then it's kinda impossible for the management minor. AND, who is my advisor? i have so many questions and i don't know who i'm suppose to email. oooh and one last question, i wanna go to med school, is there a pre-med advisor that i should speak to? SO MANY QUESTIONS! SO LITTLE ANSWERS!

YE whats the deal with advisers, I am gonna be in the school of mangement and I was just wondreing do i have to speak with my adviser before i pick coarses or if not what does the advisor do.

Yeah! awesome for you!!

For organic chem you have to sign up for the lab at the same time as you sign up for the lecture, ie, they won't let you register for one without the other.

No, you don't have to take any english or social studies courses, however if you have an elective and want to then you're more than welcome to.

For advisors when it comes time for course selection you will be in contact with an advisor, you'll get e-mails about it. If I remember correctly you have to fill out an intended course registration sheet, indicating the courses you'd like to register for. you can also include any questions, comments, or whatever on it. The advisor will e-mail you back and tell you if your courses are good or not, and answer any questions you have.

btw, three credits for macroeconomics = one class :)

I don't know about the physiology program, anyway wouldn't you not have to worry about that till next year?

So glad you decided on McGill! enjoy the rest of your spring/summer!

thanks harpgirl! ONE MORE THING! hehe so collegeboard will mail them the AP score report in July, and then how long would it take for them to get back to me on the credits? Can i sign up for the classes that i want before they confirm the exemptions or do i have to wait? do u remember when an advisor emailed u? lol cause the minute she does i'm just gonna bombard her with questions!

hey there

The registration program will not let you sign up for the org lecture without signing up for the lab as well. So don't worry about that.

There are no arts requirements for the BSc.

I don't know what course listing you were looking at for honors, but if it was 79 credits, then yes, you do have to take all of them. It is difficult but not impossible to do honors + a minor. Though it will be easier for you since you have advance credits. Entry into honors in in U2.

Are you still a U0 student? You only have 31 credits, so you shouldn't be U1, right? You declare your major in U1. And once you do, you will be assigned a physiology advisor by the dept stdt affair officer. In the meantime, you just have general arts/sci advising.

thanks alex! lol so no honors program for me. going to stick with major! yes i'm about to be a U0 student. 31 credits? do u mean ap credits? um is organic chem going to slaughter me? what about calc 3? any killer classes or professors i have to watch out for?

You have credit for seven 4-credit coures + 3, that's where 31 came from. Although now that I think about it, stats may be 3 credits, I can't remember off the top of my head. Org is tough. Study hard! I don't know about MATH 222 because I took engineering calculus instead (MATH 150/151 = MATH 140/141/222). Take it with Hundemer if you can. He is fantastic.

crazychai! CONGRATULATIONS! I'm so excited for you! you got exempted for 7 credits?? holy bejesus! How many AP's did you have to take for that? Wow, I can't believe it's all happening. I'm so happy for you! If you're doing a minor in management, maybe I'll have some classes with you if I go! Although, I suppose this isn't exactly like high school where the probability of having the same class with a lot of people is very high. ahhh! I'm excited! Still set on New Rez?

hey bittersweet! wow i haven't talked to u in a while on msn! where have u been??? thanks! u hear from mcgill next week don't u? omg i really hope we have same classes too! but ya the probability of that is so small. SIGH I'M DEF STILL SET ON NEW REZ!!! want it so baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. lol. ya i took 8 AP classes in high school and bio is the only AP test that i decided not to take. which brings up a question, i know i definitely want to use my AP math credits but now i'm not so sure about the science ones. i mean i wanna go to med school so like intro chem and physics would be pretty important for the MCAT's right? i'm thinking of just retaking chem 120. cept in the undergrad catalogue, all it says is that it's about principles of physical chemistry. don't know what that covers. what do u think? and everyone else PLEASE EXPRESS OPINIONS!

yup, end of next week! I'm starting to get really nervous! Yea, I've had like on average two tests or exams a day in the last week or so, so I'm really stressed out right now. It's all over at the end of this week though. IB predicted marks are in and no more evaluations until the exams! About the advanced placement stuff, I've been told not to take any courses you might think are important. Most of my friends who are going into medecine, or science rather, are not going to declare any of their science credits. Things like English and stuff you can definately take. I don't remember which credits you got, but...I would make sure that you're not missing out on anything. If I'm offered credits, I'm going to take chemistry and english and do math again. Math, I think, is really important and it's really easy to forget a lot of the stuff, so I wouldn't take the math credits. My Physics teacher said that for MCATs you don't need much more than gr. 11 or 12 physics, so maybe you can take the physics credits. The only thing is, if you take the credits, you may not be exposed to it for a while or they may be teaching you stuff that's more advanced, and you don't want to be playing catch-up. If they're pre-req's for something you want to take later, I don't suggest you take them, but if they're not, by all means. Although I really don't know how difficult or how much they actually teach in first year or in the intro courses, but that's my take on it.

wuh? I have no idea what classes I want to take. Is there someone I could talk to to counsel me with some guidance? (ie guidance counsellor) muahahaa

doesn't the course catalogue tell you what courses you have to take?

can someone explain to me how the courses work, at least in first year? Because I was told that you had to take Biology, Chem, Physics and Calc the first year for sciences. That's four subjects..and I know that each course is worth 3 or 4 credits generally..and there are two semesters. So does that work out to be 24-32 credits a year? Are you only allowed to take four subjects a year? How does the major and minor thing work with that? And how come there are all these course codes like Calc 120 (random guess)? What do those mean?

I'll do my best.

Freshman science requires
Calculus
Chemistry
Calculus
Biology (1 semester only).

Average course load is 15 credits. Maximum (and it is doable) course load is 17. Science courses are weighted 4 credits due to labs/tutorials, except for a few exeptions. The course numbers relate to specific courses....here's a brief overview:

Chemistry 110--general chemistry 1. All science students are required to take this chemistry 1st semester. It's a really good course. 4 credits, 3 hours lecture, 2.5 hours lab.

Chemistry 120--general chemistry 2. Same as for Chem110 except for 2nd semester.

Math 139--not a terribly popular math course, this is calculus for people who've never been exposed to it before. 3 credits (?)

Math 140--Calculus 1, designed for students who've taken calculus in high school. 3 credits. 3 hours lecture, 1 hour tutorial. Not a terribly difficult class if you've been exposed to calculus before. AP calc. AB places you out of this course.

Math 141--Calculus 2, the 2nd semester continuation of Math 140. This course is worth 4 credits because you now have a 2.5 hour tutorial (lucky you!). AP calc BC places you out of this course

Math 150, 151, these two courses combine the material from Calc 1, 2, and 3. They are a more advanced stream of calculus if you 're interested in a math major or just generally good at math. 4 credits each.

Math 133--linear algebra 1. If you intend to go into physics related subjcets, this is a good, good class to take. In fact it's not a bad idea taking it if you plan to do anything other than life sciences.

Physics 101--intro to physics, mechanics. The physics for people who've never had much physics, this course uses algebra/trig to do physics. 4 credits, 3 hour lecture plus 2.5 hour lab.

Physics 102.--intro to physics, electromagnetism. Continuation of physics 101 for 2nd semester. also 4 credits.

Physics 131--intro to physics, mechanics. Physics using calculus, you must do this stream of physics if you want to do engineering, physics, or anything non-life sciency. recommended that you've done some physics before. 4 credits, lecture, lab, and tutorial.

Physics 142--intro to physics, electromagnetism. Continuation of physics 131.

Biology 111--1st semester bio class, covering organisms and stuff. 4 credits, lecture and lab

Biology 112--2nd semester bio class, covering cell and molecular biology. 4 credits, lecture and lab.

You only have to do one of the two biology classes, though if you want to major in biology you should probably take both. AP bio places you out of and gets you credit for both.

So if you work out the credits, say you decide to take
Chem 110
Math 140
Physics 131
Bio 111

That's 15 credits right there. a full load. However arts electives are generally 3 credits so if you want a challenging schedule, or for whatever reason think one of the science classes will be easy for you, then you can take an arts elective. There's a list you can choose from, it covers a lot of stuff.

second semester, say you do

Chem 120
Calc 141
Physics 142

THen you have two open spots. you might want to do math 133, or perhaps the other biology class, or you could have two spots for arts electives. You're at 12 credits...add two more arts and you're at 17.

So for year that works out to 30 to 36 credits per year.

I hope this clarified rather than confused?
take care
noelle

I'm wondering if 1st year Art students have similar leeway? I will be entering year 1 (I'm from the CEGEP stream, so of a 3 year program) and I will be pursuing an Economics Major, yet I would love to take 2 semester of Chemistry and Biology or Chemistry and Physics during my first year. Is this possible? (Note: I already have Linear Algebra, Calc. 1 & 2). Thanks

Probably it would be. Arts students have a spot in their schedule designed for a math/science course :) esp. econ majors, which are more math-y arts students, tend to take more math/science courses.

error..maximum credit load is 18, not 17. and you can get permission to do more easily. my ex boyfriend is doing a schedule of 6 courses for 19 credits.

Thanks, that did help. so, that's a maximum of 18 credits per semester? So if you got exempt from a whole bunch of courses like crazychai did you can just move on and fast track a bit into second year stuff right?

hey bittersweet...thanx for the opinion! after talking to my AP teachers, friends, and actually some of the professors at McGill (they are really responsive! i emailed them yesterday and i got feedback today), i think i'm going to take the credits for math, physics, and macro. as for chem, i think i'll take the credit for 110 but retake the chem 120 class.

btw harpgirl, i recall that u wanted to do a management minor also? how competitive is it to get in the program. Pg 342 of the calendar makes it sound pretty hard. also, since i'm getting credit for math 203, which is a required course for the minor, do i not have to take mgcr 211 anymore before entering the program?

im currently taking 21 credits this semester- but I'm in Music which is intense, plus double majoring.
