I was reading through some posts and am currently in disagreement with my mother about whether basics need two pairs of boots or just one (of the same kind). I know this is a ridiculous topic but I’m curious, thanks.

It really is up to you. We got Potterfan (1) pair to break in before BCT, and never heard her complain. She doesn't complain about much though so she may not be the best example.

I called the Academy about this - I was told not to buy boots, that boots would be issued. Which makes me think we are getting the new (green) ones.

The latest news has said that 2012 will be issued one set of ABUs and 3 sets of BDUs... They're slowly trying to phase them in and don't have enough for everyone. That may change though. The plan seems to change every couple of weeks at this point.

Shouldn't you be asleep by now. Four hours of sleep a night can't be good for you redhead.

Oh and did you enjoy the civilian clothes, and pie as much as potter. She said she didn't try the pie eating though.

So when you buy boots at orientation, are you buying one pair or two?

i'd suggest 1 b/c i've only ever worn the second pair the day after the a-course and for airsoft club. plus the pair you buy at orientation comes out of your own money, so the other one will be issued to you. it is good to get at least 1 though b/c you'll have a better chance of not getting blisters.

btw ds52262 the winner of the pie eating was my roomate

I only have one pair. Sometimes it has been a pain to keep them looking good (some people's boots get messed up in BCT). I will be buying a new pair soon...

If you take good care of them, and are not one of the unlucky people that ruins the finish in BCT, one pair should last at least a year.

You are actually paying for both. If you buy at orientation, you will pay then. If not, then both will still be deducted from your pay in your loan.

I got two pairs last year. It's expensive, but as hornet mentioned, you'll pay for them any way, so that's not much of a important factor.

The most obvious disadvantage that comes to mind with bringing two pairs is that you'll be caring an extra pair for a little bit longer (although you really don't care about time during I-day). My roomate didn't bring any though, and he said he was fine. It's up to you pretty much.

falcon20af, that was your roomate? Man, I've never seen anyone eat pie that fast before. My roomate was representing 24, but he'd just come from football practice and wasn't in much of a pie-eating mood.

yea that was my roomate, he even ate before that then came back to the table and ate some more

I bought one pair during Orientation and was issued a second pair at the beginning of Basic. I wore my broken-in pair during most of BCT, and they were naturally pretty dirty by the time Acceptance Day rolled around. I decided to designate those as my "field boots," and now I wear the other pair for normal, day to day activities for which my boots need to be well shined. It's worked out well for me.

That's a very smart idea, PETKO. Do you truly need two pairs of boots for BCT or are you just issued two pairs in case one gets ruined?

95% of the time during BCT you'll be fine with just one pair. After the Assault Course though (and possibly the Obstacle Course), your boots will be soaked and you'll be glad you've got that second pair.

i like that idea... 2 pairs: use as needed.. that way you'll have a nice set for the ac year :)

In basic you'll end up with one pair of boots that's more broken in than the other and you'll probably wear those most of the time. You can definitely tell which pair of my boots went through most of basic with me. :)

Wow, the answer is not as simple as I thought. I think I will probably buy one at orientation and try to keep the one I'm issued in pretty good condition for the year. Thanks everyone for your input

yes, very helpful, as always :)

I think I smell another potential class VP coming forward.
