2 Questions about the essays/personal statements

1) Are the personal statements really that important? Who could possibly need this much writing to determine an individual's personality?

or is it just a short paragraph that is not supposed to be timeless literature. help?

2) this is about the word limit.. they say 400-500 words; I'm using one of my UC ones and its in the 590's. Do i need to trim it or is it fine?

OK, I don't know why people talk about all these essays and personal statements! I wrote one big essay and the short answers and I got in! My essay I chose my own topic and it was a combo personal statement/my own topic. but mine was about 560 words and I sent it in and got accepted, so I think maybe if you wanna trim a sentence or two just to be safe, but they're not gonna kill you!

wait, you only wrote on one of the 3 topics? that's awesome! I have an essay that sort of answers two of them (the where you're from and the "event")

yeah...they said choose one of the following or choose your own topic! so I chose my own topic.

does nyu put more weight on the common app essay or the 4 short answer ones?

def the essay!

NYU is such a large school, I don't think there's a strong emphasis on any of the essays you provide. I guess it depends on the admissions officer, though.

I think there will be a strong emphasis on the essays and EC's. There are probably about 30,000 applications each year to NYU and the majority will probably have similiar, competitive and respectable stats. I think what draws you out is your essay and how they evaluate you as a person. Of course, numbers do help and especially your EC's. But again, like what angelnikki1 said, it ultimately depends on your admission officer. Good luck though!

do you think they'd take the time to read my coverletter? explains crucial info. but its about 4 pgs. lol....y did i even ask.

Okay you know how it says on the commonapp, and probably the regular nyu app too, that the limit is like 500, 600 words for the essay?
Well, mine was a little more than 1000. All I did was fix the margins so it was one page. And hey, look at that, I got in! They didn't call me up and say that it wasn't sufficient because it was about more than 400 words over and tell me to do it again, so stop worrying. especially with like 50 words over.

seriously, do not sweat at all about the essays!
I wrote really crappy, generic essays that were barely more than a paragraph and still got in~

y17k aghh YOUR STATS A FRIGGING HIGH DAMMIT. REMEMBER THAT.

h2online, doesn't that prove that as long as your SAT scores are good then you get in? :D

Alright, am i missing something? I see that they only ask for one essay... Is this sufficient?

yes it was me who didn't see it.. my bad everyone

y17k, sorry for jumping on you. I just lost my sanity for a moment cause I was jealous of your 1500.

no problems ><.
Sorry if I sound like I am trying to belittle NYU in any way, but this is honestly the impression I get from talking to various NYU people :(
