OK, I don't know why people talk about all these essays and personal statements! I wrote one big essay and the short answers and I got in! My essay I chose my own topic and it was a combo personal statement/my own topic. but mine was about 560 words and I sent it in and got accepted, so I think maybe if you wanna trim a sentence or two just to be safe, but they're not gonna kill you!

wait, you only wrote on one of the 3 topics? that's awesome! I have an essay that sort of answers two of them (the where you're from and the "event")

NYU is such a large school, I don't think there's a strong emphasis on any of the essays you provide. I guess it depends on the admissions officer, though.

I think there will be a strong emphasis on the essays and EC's. There are probably about 30,000 applications each year to NYU and the majority will probably have similiar, competitive and respectable stats. I think what draws you out is your essay and how they evaluate you as a person. Of course, numbers do help and especially your EC's. But again, like what angelnikki1 said, it ultimately depends on your admission officer. Good luck though!

Okay you know how it says on the commonapp, and probably the regular nyu app too, that the limit is like 500, 600 words for the essay?
Well, mine was a little more than 1000. All I did was fix the margins so it was one page. And hey, look at that, I got in! They didn't call me up and say that it wasn't sufficient because it was about more than 400 words over and tell me to do it again, so stop worrying. especially with like 50 words over.

no problems ><.
Sorry if I sound like I am trying to belittle NYU in any way, but this is honestly the impression I get from talking to various NYU people :(
