2006: How Many Colleges Did You Apply To?

colleges

rolio: around 10.

how do you do around 10 lol... its either 9 or 11

For all you aghast at more than a handful of apps....dd1 applied to ten schools with a first choice to which she was not admitted. In April it was a very interesting process to watch...she turned down a top school in the city she earlier said she "had" to live in (her second choice as of Oct) because of course requirements, in favor of another school with no core. (this was the last app she did, on the due date, and with a "I'm not sure if I want to even go there but I already did most of the app so why not" attitude).

The moral of the story: what you think you want in October may not be the same come May 1. I also don't believe you can, or mabe even should, truly "try on" a school until you know you've been accepted, especially at the hyper stats level. With the odds stacked against you, and so many great schools to choose from, why get so heavily invested before decisions?

So, this year dd2 is a senior...with 14 apps.

2 Safety, 5 match....with a grain of salt as some have admit rates below 30%, 7 match/reach, reach. Yes, it's very top heavy. But she's a top student and a very adaptable kid (from moving ALOT) and knows she could be happy in a college town or a city. They range from small LAC to mid size uni. Again she says it doesn't matter. And so we wait. The no's will be hard(and there certainly will be some), but as she says, if you don't try you'll never know.

I expect I'll finally know "what really counts" for her at the end of April.

If I had dd3 (thank goodness I don't) my advice would be the same.

i only applied to five schools. i dont know the resulta until april first. there are kids at my school who applied to boatloads though. number one in our class applied to 20 something which just annoys me, because he'll take that many spots away from lesser qualified students for whom that school was a first choice. and i know colleges expect people to go crazy on apps and stuff, but still.

I applied to 13. Since I am poor, I have that power.

8......also poor, fee waived on all of em...

BU
BC
Cornell (AEM...big reach 18-20% acc rate)
Vanderbilt
Johns Hopkins
Tufts
Case western ( Accepted...got half ride.. another 19 k in grants..would pay 9 k a year to attend...but i live 20 min away...so not really a top choice)
Ohio State ( accepted.....huge sports fan...but im not pickin a college based on their sports teams)

I think i have a very solid list......i wish i woulda applied to like 2 more...lol , i think thats just the anxiety in me though...

what income range qualifies you as poor?

I think 5 is a sufficient number. Although, I only applied to the UCs so applying to anymore would be a waste, IMO.

Less than $60,000 total income.

applied to 35

9 in the US
26 in India

(P.S 23 of those in India were on one app :D)

I applied to:

Clarkson University, U of S.florida (got in both)

U mich, Ut - austin, MIT, caltech, harvey mudd

I regret having applied to UT-Austin. Should have applied to UIUC instead

....only 756 gave the poll!!!!! shocked
Is everyone lazy to give a click...or is it just that CC doesn't have that many members....

Can anyone tell me how many CC members currently are there..
(and how many are active!!)

Most have applied to 10+ colleges? Wow. I almost feel inferior for only applying to 5, though almost every single one was unique. (2 common app, 1 uncommon, 1 fasttrack, and 1 rolling admission)

well, guess i'm poor, too. i applied to 7 schools, only got fee waived for 5 because there was a problem with my incompetent guidance counselor sending stuff out. but yeah...

I would be terrified all year if I only applied to one school. It's just soo risky!

Best thing to do is to try and do all the stuff yourself. School beauracracy is usually always a corrupt morass.

i applied to 7. 2 high reaches and 1 safety. in the fall, i thought i would never get those apps done. i got the "you're ridiculous" look from my counselor quite often since most students at my school only fill out one app. (for the state university). i spent a lot of time reading about colleges and visiting them, and in the end had a list of 7 to consider, but now, i'm finding out about even more schools that i might be interested in. i'm not sure how i missed out on them since i spent most of the summer obssessing over college guides; i guess they didn't impress me then, but now they sure look good. too late though. back then, people made me feel like i was crazy for applying to 7, which only discouraged more when it came to getting everything done. today, i wish i applied to 10-13.

juniors: research your schools well so that you know each college/university is suitable for you because in march, you want your choices to be appealing. apps. can become a burden, and no matter how motivated you are, there will come a time when you will just want to go to bed instead of writing another draft for an essay. but believe me, it's all worth it when you have choices not only in schools but also in scholarships come march. i would say 10 is a comfortable number. and apply to more than one safety.

i applied to 12.
accepted by three
will be rejected by the other 9

14 shame
