2008-2009 applicants

Let me rephrase: USC is PROBABLY off the list.

Do you think you can talk your folks into $50k per year for USC? :-)

Scarlet, you may be right that USC is better, but if you don't get accepted or if you can't afford it, then that's it. I know that for my S, he wants to study film production. He could have chosen to go to a big state u that has lots more going on, school spirit, etc., but then he wouldn't have gotten to study film.

So, like you said, it's important to really think through what it is you want out of college. Also, you have to think about what your options realistically are.

Congrats on that scholarship, Gregcotten! I am sure your parents are dancing in the streets about now. :-)

We are planning a trip to Chapman (and USC if it's still in the picture by then) April 5-8.

Congratulations gregcotten on that fabulous scholarship! Remember that the comments here are that of one person. There are many who think that Chapman is the better choice for film. There are also many who would never even consider USC. I know that you will make your decision based on your visits and financial considerations. As for you, scarletstar89, if Chapman is trying to emulate USC, that should make you happy, shouldn't it? Oh, and don't worry, USC is still know as the University of Second Choice! (Put that in for the UCLA grads here.) Go Chapman!

I wholeheartedly agree, Adultparentmom!

Thanks for your perspective, Scarlet. The traffic and commute is a huge worry point for me, in regards to Chapman.

Hopeful2012, Congratulations on your acceptance!! Screenwriting....you'll have a blast.

I suspect you'll get the letter about Accepted Students Days in a week or so. S started getting stuff in the mail from Chapman probably about a week after his big envelope.

You might want to join the Facebook group for Chapman 2012 so you can get to know your future classmates.

Are you pretty sure you will accept the offer of admission?

I have to compare all my financial aid packages. If I get into USC (such a long stretch), I'd go not matter what I had to do. I'm in love with that school.

Chapman is high on my list -- so I'm contemplating it very heavily. There's so many factors, it hurts my head to think about it right now because I can't truly compare until I hear back from my other 4 schools and their financial aid offices.

Hey, everyone! Congrats to all who got into Chapman :) If "Admission Approved" means I got in (does it?!), I guess I'll be seeing you all at the start of the semester :D

Loco

Chapman is my first choice school and a "reach" but I was admitted. I was really happy until I found out I don't qualify for any aid at all. No merit, grants, etc. I have about $33K/year saved but don't know if it's worth taking loans out to pay the rest.

JPSandiego, have you been given money anywhere else? We are visiting Chapman again, because my daughter has been accepted to many schools, and Chapman is still the school that she has loved the most. We are waiting for a couple of schools before saying definitely YES to Chapman, but there is something about this school that she finds appealing. She does not have 100% scholarship either and she could go to the UCs, but she thinks Chapman is better for her. One of her best male friends is definitely going to Chapman. I guess only you and your family can make the financial decision and whether or not Chapman University is worth it.

Oh, wait! Do I see that you have $33K PER YEAR saved? Are you kidding me? That is fantastic! I see now why there is no "aid"! I think the total cost of Chapman (dorms included) is about $47,000. You COULD pay cash at a UC and have something left over. Is the approximately $13,000/year that you would get as loans to attend Chapman, worth it? Completely personal, but we are doing it.

Adultparentmom, why do you think Chapman is the school your D has loved most? Has she visited there?

accepted!! but i really had no intention of ever going to chapman...no idea why i even applied (it was a "safety" for me)

however, i'm starting to have second thoughts, seems like alot of you like the school..and i'm going to look into it more..however, congrats to all of those who really wanted to get in!!

yay i'm accepted!!!!

digital arts.

well. but i'm not sure if i wanan go anymore...

i applied film production, but was rejected becasue of space limitations. (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO).
then i got a phone call. and apparently they really really like me/my application a lot and that i'm one of those few ppl every year who gets these phone calls, and then they asked if i wanted to be considered for my 2nd choice major. so yeah, accepted to digital arts.

altho,... i'm not sure if digital arts is my real passion.... anybody know about the program? all i know is that it's new..... and it's a good major, too.

and it's hard to switch majors into film cause its always so full, rite?

Did anyone get a call from a professor tonight wanting to discuss Chapman? They left a message on my machine -- I'll call them back Monday. This is their first contact of any sort since my acceptance and recent receiving of financial aid package.

timely, funny you should ask! We just got back from a second visit today. I can only say that she "discovered" Chapman University from an early interest in the film area. I am familiar with it from the Chapman "College" days and "floating campus", but had not seen it in many years. We visited last year and she just liked it there. The area, campus, beautiful new buildings, small size, dorms, and more. It is just far enough from home, (2 hours today, but three if traffic is horrendous) and we have some family in Newport Beach, if she ever needed someone close. Today we took the usual tour, but were able to see a different dorm. It was just basically cementing the fact that she still likes everything. She does. Her interests are so varied, and even though she did not apply to film, she likes the fact that the school is there with all of the creative people. The growth of the campus seems just right. Not too much to make it like other big schools, but the new modern buildings are just beautiful. The special "Chapman Brick" is pretty. She wants the individual attention where professors know her name. She likes sports, even D3 football! Angel Stadium is not far. She likes the fact that there is a law school. She likes quaint Old Towne Orange. She likes Newport, Balboa Island, an Laguna Beach. UCI is just down the freeway. Most especially, she wants a yearly pass to Disneyland. I thought the grounds were beautiful. This school is really becoming known, I think due to the film school. This will bring attention to all of the other academic areas, too. We were in England last summer and my daughter was wearing her Chapman sweatshirt (acquired on her first visit) and I heard an American say, "oh, look, Chapman!" Internationally known, ha ha! I think for some, it is a safety school, until they visit. Don't go by the rich, snobby reputation. Those types are everywhere, but, I must say, the students were normal looking to me. We talked to someone in the financial area, and she could not have been nicer. This is important, as some schools do not have friendly administration types. Today we were told that they guarantee all four years of housing. I spoke to a student who lived two years in dorms and then rented an apartment right near campus. She said most students live in the general area. She walks to campus, but is considered a "commuter". You can literally live across the street and be designated a commuter. The university has its own apartments right behind the dorms, if that is your preferred type of housing. This is important, because we don't want, as parents, to have to worry about where she will live after the dorms. She may live all four years in the dorms, but somehow, I doubt it. We were standing by the Leatherby Library at noon today and the bells were ringing announcing the noon hour and the chimes were lovely. The new "four pillar" fountain was dancing, that isn't the name, but that is the subject matter of the fountain. It was just a nice day. My daughter is still waiting for one more school and then we will sit down and go over all of them. She has already eliminated some schools, after her visits. Lastly, try to visit schools during the week to get a feeling for the students and campus life. The campus was lively today, with much screaming on the Memorial lawn and athletes on the field and greek types all over (as noted by their matching shirts) and some dance thing going on, too. A professor wandered by our tour and stopped to say hello to us. I probably have forgotten things, but if you want to ask me something, I will tell you what I know. Oh, know that if you take the tour they give free food passes so you can test the food there. We ate before the tour in the dining area, and payed!

Wow, I wrote a book! I should have used paragraphs. Hope you all can read that.

haha thanks for the post adultparentmom! very very helpful since i have not visited chapman before and i think i will need to pay a visit over spring break. i suppose my visit will ultimately decide whether i will go here or not, since it is one of my top choices (even tho i havent visited yet).

by the way, what do the dorms look like? Are they nice? Big (in comparison to most UC dorms)? Private bathrooms (haha)?

coolrena8, I can tell you what we saw on our two visits and hopefully a Chapman student will chime in , too. First visit we toured South Morlan Hall. It is old and looks like a motel. The two students had a room and private bath. The door opens to the outside. They were not freshmen and requested this room assignment. My daughter didn't like it. There is North Morlan, much the same. This tour we saw a room in Pralle-Sodaro Hall. New and nice, rooms inside a building. The room was HUGE, as dorms go. It is meant to be a triple and has a "Jack and Jill" bathroom set-up where they share it with the room next door. I think it had two showers and two sinks. The third roommate was on that study abroad thing. My son had a triple at UCLA the first year and this was MUCH larger. The building right next to this hall is Henley and that is even newer and each room has its own bath. That is my daughter's first choice. Nice buildings and another residence hall is under construction. (That is why first years get the triples!) I wouldn't be surprised if the Morlan Halls are bulldozed in the next few years, but many students really want them! I prefer the security of the building and Henley has amazing amenities. Go to the Chapman website and go to residence life, housing options and look at each. (I don't think there are any bath down the hall type residences.) Oh, and each room has heat and air controlled by each room. My daughter stayed at USC and the dorm was a traditional hall with the communal bath and NO air conditioning. She had a fan, but was really hot. Definitely check out the website!

Adultparentmom, thanks for all the info! It really sounds beautiful. S is into aesthetics, so I think that will appeal to him. :-) It was good to know the dorm info, too. A double at Morlan or a triple at Pralle-Sodaro (I have to find out how to pronounce that) costs about the same. S is absolutely the messiest person alive, so I think a triple could be a bad idea. I don't know...maybe that would be better because 2 people could yell at him to pick up.

Oops I just realized I never responded to timely's post which was a long time ago.

@ timely: I'm applying for Political Science major at Chapman. I got into UC Davis, so unless Chapman accepts me and gives me a hefty scholarship (my parents are iffy about the money aspect), I'm probably headed to Davis. I mainly want to know if I got into Chapman out of curiosity, since I applied there early. I'm doubting that I got into Chapman. Oh well, no biggie. Congrats to those who got in and I hope you guys have fun! :)
