2009 PSAT Scores and Discussion

im not a genius
im not even a native speaker
i got much lower scores than most of you did

here’s mine:

CR: 60 4 omitted; 9 wrong 86 percentile
MA:79 0 omitted; 1 wrong 99 percentile
WR: 63 0 omitted; 6 wrong 92 percentile
TOTAL:202 97 percentile

it is what i expect so i dont have much to say about it, but the math curve is pretty generous. i heard people saying on previous tests you got 75 if you got 1 wrong

mukubird:

As for vocab, I never found studying the words Princeton Review gave me helpful. If you do study vocab it’s far more important IMO to study their usage in sentences rather than studying definitions. Plenty will disagree, but it helps me remember. I think it’s more valuable to simply read more and become well-versed overall. However, if vocabulary haunts you when you do CR, you should look into some study methods for it. Helpful, I know :P

yes I had four no errors too, which seemed like a lot. was the trails question the one with “comprised” as a choice?

How do you get the test books back?

My S got a 199 score, 96 %. Did anyone get scores like this–198, 200, 201? What percentile were you? I would like to try to figure out National Merit Commended cut off

has anyone received their scores online (from college quickstart)? i’m from canada and think that the actual paper scores will probably take longer to get here than to schools in the states, so i signed up for the online score reporting. i got a letter in the mail yesterday (that was date november 17th) that was from an organization saying that they had heard about me from the “College Board, the organization that administers that SAT and PSAT tests”. I’m hoping this means my PSAT scores are good, but I don’t understand how this organization can already know my PSAT scores mid November, while I still don’t know them.

Not sure if this has already been asked, but how did this year’s Critical Reading (difficulty and curve) compare to previous years? It seemed like some of the vocabulary that they asked was fairy menial and trivial, but then again, I didn’t study too much for it…

^The curve was good this year on it, which essentially means the CR section was more difficult. -1 was still an 80, and I think I missed 5 and got a 72, lol. (-5 as in I missed 4 and got a point taken off for the 4x 0.25).

I personally thought that section was uncharacteristically hard. I thought that the vocab was harder than usual, because that was the root of I think 3/4 of my errors, and usually I get perfect scores on the vocab portion. The passages were as easy as ever, IMO.

Michaelwiggins, I agree completely. I got a 74 on that section (not sure how many I missed, as I only got the score and not the breakdwon of points yet). Some of that vocab was definitely bordering on unreasonable. The passages, as you said, were much better. Ah well, maybe I should do a bit more studying of vocab before next year…

Wondering if cutoff in NJ will be 200 or 221 this yr.

Also why the curve was harsher for saturday’s test. Just 2 wrong on Writing was a 70, but was a 73 on Wednesday. Are they different test questions, and Wednesdays was harder?

Wednesday’s was apparently harder.

harder is subjective.

i was just wondering for the wednesday version. was the answer to one of the sentence ID errors, “That.” It was the first word of the sentence, I think…

andyjo24: I believe that was the last question on the identifying errors section and the answer was “No error.”

So do you guys think the state cut offs will be slightly lower this year? I’m fairly sure they won’t be higher, right?

This post > http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063627469-post616.html

says the following:

"Information from here:
http://professionals.collegeboard.co…sqt-scores.pdf

and here:
College-Bound Juniors & Sophomores 2008 - PSAT/NMSQT

indicate that the cutoffs may be lower for many states this year. 25% of us juniors (including me) did worse this year than last year. The mean score, based on the 2008 test, of CR went up 0.3 pts, M went down 0.5 pts, and W went up 0.1 pts. Also, unless I read this incorrectly…almost 1.6 million juniors took it in 2008. A little over 1.2 million took it this year."

So the state cut offs should be lower, right? I live in TX, so does anyone have any specific information?

I’m still waiting for my score…
Thanks

“harder is subjective.”

It’s very reasonable and objective to classify a test whose curve was very strict as having harder questions.

^ you mean lenient

^ Whoops. You’re right.

so do u think the cutoffs will be lower? last year ny was 218… please be 217 this year

if you don’t get a letter from other colleges talking about hearing you from the collegeboard is it safe to assume your PSATS sucked?

^ No. I don’t think schools are shipping out the junk-mail yet.
