Certain :-\ I’ll ask her to see it again and see if I miscalculated or misread. I know the number is radical but I’m at a loss as to what I might have done wrong.

To answer some questions (only the ones I happen to know!), NJ’s highest cutoff so far has been a 223 (the year my son got a 222!). Yes, each state varies from year to year, but as far as I know, not dramatically. In other words, don’t expect NJ’s cutoff to go down to, say, 210. It usually varies by a couple of points. As far as the PSAT being easy this year, well, I’m not sure. Many of my students claimed it was “so easy,” but then their scores turned out to not be too good. At any rate, what an ‘easy’ PSAT would do would be to simply shift the number correct you need in order to achieve a score (the bell shaped curve would simply have slightly different hard numbers assigned to the percentiles on the curve). It wouldn’t (theoretically) impact the cutoff, unless test were SO easy that an inordinate number of people scored perfectly, but then the test would be invalid, and I don’t think that’ll be the case.

The curve proves that, at least, the Math section was not easy.

My school is withholding our scores until tomorrow despite an announcement on Friday that they had come in. After reading all the threads, I really want to know! I have a good deal of hope of being a semifinalist, as I live in PA, got a 220 last year as a sophomore, and got an application in the mail for Telluride yesterday (they supposedly send applications out to high PSAT scorers). I’ll definitely let everyone know tomorrow after I get my score report.

Also, regarding earlier questions about public school and private schools testing on certain dates, in Pennsylvana, or at least in the Philadelphia area, it completely depends on the school. I go to a private school and we took the Saturday test, but the rest of the schools in our league were evenly spread for the two test dates, as were the public schools.

Good luck to everyone!

Yipee, received daughter’s score in mail Saturday (Homeschool in Michigan) score of 212, last year cut off was 209 for Michigan. I don’t think Michigan’s score will jump four points - there is not many people left in Michigan because of the economy!

“I don’t think Michigan’s score will jump four points - there is not many people left in Michigan because of the economy!”

:)

Any other thoughts on this lower than usual commended cutoff?
Silverturtle? You seem to be the authority on these matters…

They already announced the commended cutoff? What is it?

Assuming 50,000 are picked for recognition, the 95.87th percentile is required. 197 is about the 95.60th percentile. 201 is about the 96.55th percentile. 198 would probably be the cut-off.

I’ve been checking CB’s college quickstart for the scores and still haven’t gotten them and until now I had no clue that the scores were out at some schools. All I have to do now is wait I guess. This anxiety is like AP scores all over again. I know I messed up a few on the CR section. The questions discussion doesn’t help because I don’t remember what I put for them (except for the 278…I’m pretty sure I got that)…nervesssss AH

^Same, I get my cores back on Tuesday and am so nervous. I worked hard studying and really want to get national merit in Ohio. silverturtle, because the commended cutoff is lower this year than in years past, will national merit cutoff be lower for most states (Ohio)?

Why haven’t I received the score yet?? I am quite worried.

Don’t fret if you haven’t gotten your scores. Most schools are holding them a bit longer.

Hey, I am a little confused. When you say it is in the 99.5 percentile, that means that is higher than 99.5% of other people right? So when you work it out, lets say 3600 people get a 222. Does that mean that there was a total of 3600 people who got that or higher, or does that mean 3600 people got that score, possibly another 3600 got a 223, another 3500 got a 224, etc?

parental_unit ^^ i was saying what silverturtle just said. Commended is either top 50,000 or just generally around the 96th percentile. Either way, it’s much lower this year than it was previous years. It will probably be around 197 or 198 since thats the 96th percentile.

I FINALLY got my scores on Friday and am ecstatic with my score of 238. I have my score report with me so if anyone has any questions about controversial answers just let me know.
:)

btw, it says on my score report that commended is for the top 55,000

Alexa, congrats! You bested me by 4
What was you score breakdown/which areas did you find most challenging?

The official NM press release will be made in the fall.

CR 80, M 80, W 78. and of course i’m obsessing over the one stupid writing question i got wrong
