2009 PSAT Scores and Discussion

Aznballa: Look at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063359519-post1169.html

The cutoff for class of 2010 in TX was 216 and 215 for class of 2009. It does not change very much for a big state like Texas.

I think (don’t quote me here) that the highest the cutoff has ever been in TX is 218 and the lowest it’s ever been is 214.

I got a 240. Can anyone tell me my chances of getting merit. I live in AZ if that helps.

If you got a 240, you will be a National Merit Semifinalist regardless of what state you are from. Although that post smacks of a ■■■■■ post…

Right on bra

to get national merit scholar semifinalist, do you have to score above the cutoff, or can you get the cutoff and still make it

for example, if the cutoff is a 218, will you get a semifinalist with a 218 or do you have to score over a 218

218 would be fine.

^alright, thanks

omg haha :(

216 in cali…

made alot of dum mistakes. I guess I’m going to miss the cut off by 1-2 points…I’m praying that it drops to 216, but I’m pretty sure it won’t.

edit: when do we know the cut-offs?

We officially find out the cutoffs for the HS Class of 2011 in September 2010.

That’s a long time. Any chances of CA dropping from 218 to 216?

I heavily doubt it. Unless a lot of people did bad on the PSAT this year. But I doubt that. And esp. for a state like CA, it dropping by 2 is VERY, VERY unlikely.

^Thanks, that’s pretty much what I thought.

I read somewhere that the national average dropped 4 points on the PSAT. Maybe since California schools have been hit so hard economically the average went down substantially there as well.

^The collegeboard curve should account for that stuff though.

Any news on the petition?

I found out yesterday that we were misinformed by a College Board employee about the proper procedure for sending in petitions. We were told that the document had to be emailed and in PDF format; apparently, however, this man was mistaken: one has to mail in petitions.

Unfortunately, the College Board did not care to amend its initial notice that my inquiry was being processed. I intend to mail in a copy early next week after I make some modifications.

my PSAT score is even worse than my SAT score…= =

I have dedicated about ten hours over the last few days to the petition in an effort to make it even more cogent and cohesive. I’m sending it in tomorrow; I’ll post here as soon as I get a reply. Hopefully, my efforts and the truth will be given due consideration.

I am willing to email my petition to anyone who is interested in reading it; I welcome any challenges to my position. Here are the respective definitions of “explanation of” and “explanation for” that I proposed and subsequently proved in my petition, for those who are interested:

“explanation of”: (a) something that explains, where “explain” means to describe or define; (b) the act of explaining.

“explanation for”: (a) something that explains, where “explain” means to give the reason for; (b) a justification for something.

215 is cali here lol
if only I had lived in alaska…

Good luck on that petition silverturtle; that question was one of the only ones I got wrong on the writing section, but apparently I deserved those points.
