whatfunii - don’t be discouraged. no, this should not be an indicator of the college application review. may i ask where all you’ve received rejections on the scholarship front?

It’s not letting me log in. Is anyone else having this problem? I’ve been able to log in in the past but not now…

Yeah late reply, but I got rejected from AXA, Best Buy, Sam Walton, Coca Cola finalist(I was a semifinalist but this scholarship is like impossible) and some local ones. I’m thinking I might not demonstrate need or the community service they’re looking for. I also noticed that there are very few Asians than win, which could be discrimination or just because not many asians apply in the first place.

Hey…
Finally heard something from the Elks after I had given up…LOL
Email I got tonight:

"Your daughter’s application was received by the Union scholarship committee and was screened along with all the other applications. We have a scoring guide provided by the Elks Grand Lodge that is used to score each application received . Our guidelines provide that we are allowed to send the six highest scoring applications from our lodge to the state Elks Scholarship Committee for judging for state awards. Your daughter’s score was very good and her application was forwared to the state level. Judging is done there in February and winners are notified directly by the state committee. If she is a state scholarship winner, she should receive information soon.

If she does not win a state scholarship award, she will be considered along with all the other applicants to our lodge for a local scholarship award. Those awards are announced later in the spring. Her application was processed according to the guidelines of the scholarship committee and she will be considered at each level of judging."

Obviously, I know she did not win at the state level but at least I know what happened and she may still get a local award :)

Take Care,
Lisa

Hey guys, any idea how strict they are on the 500-word-essay-limit for the finalist applications? Do the standard 10%/20% cushion apply (and thus 550-600 is okay)?

nvm about the login problem lol

Son made it past the lodge level, but didn’t even make it to the district level. Has lots of community service, earned Eagle Scout, 3.93 GPA and dual enrolled in college classes. Had really good references letters and some cool “exhibits”. He thinks the fact that he doesn’t have a job hurt him. (we’ve always discouraged jobs in high school because we wanted him to concetrate on school)

Did anyone advance to the state or local level that doesn’t have a part time job?

No, I didn’t list a part time job, and I’m a national finalist.

@Aprilj; The Elks Foundation gives points for having a job during high school. During my awards ceremony for the scholarship, I was informed that there were several outstanding applicants–much like your son–but were put off because the job portion was blank. It was very competitive and every point counts, and unfortunately it has to be this way. I finally understand why my overqualified friend didn’t make it to nationals with me; I had a job (more like a paid internship) but he didn’t.
But of course, it all depends on the competition in your lodge. You may get by with a portion missing on the application, or you may not.

I was selected as my state winner for Missouri, but I am not sure whether that means I have preference at the national judging level. I sure hope that is what it means, but you never know… Just submitted my finalist application this morning. Can I get lucky?

I know you probably are thinking I meant state finalist, but I was notified by a call from our state lodge that I was the top applicant from Missouri… did anyone else get this?

Whether you’re the top applicant forwarded from Missouri to the nationals or the “worst” forwarded from Missouri to the nationals theoretically should not matter. I talked to the scholarship organizer from my lodge and she told me that at each judging level they throw out the scoring from previous levels and re-score each application to minimize bias.

Is the SAR (Student Aid Report) that gets sent in the one page (front, page 1 of the SAR documents) or all 5 pages (with the background numbers, etc.)?

@winplaceshow I sent the whole thing :)

anyone know when we find out which scholarship we got?

We still haven’t heard nothing but I found this on the state website…
Does it mean my DD won a state scholarship of $1,000 being there are 30 names listed?

April 15th is the decision date. I believe it’s via e-mail.

The Elks Rep came to our daughter’s school two days ago to give the scholarships to the students in person. Our daughter wasn’t a national finalist, but she received a total of $2400, $1200 for going to National level and $1200 more from the local Elks club. Not bad. Good luck to all the finalists.

@oates151: How do you know the date and that it’s by email? In 2009 it didn’t come 'till the 29th and it was in the mail…

I believe the top scholarship winners have already been notified via phone and the rest of the finalists will get that information when they receive the email tomorrow. The list of 2011 finalist that had been on the Elks website is no longer there–my thoughts are that it is being updated with the scholarship amounts and will show again tomorrow for all to see.
It’s only a thought. If you listened to the male winner from last year on the streaming video, he states he received a call on March 28th–that was a Sunday last year. Facebook notification from Elks this past weekend indicated the judges would be meeting to make their decisions—perhaps top recipients were notified via phone on Sunday this year, as well???
