Post any questions, comments, suggestions, advices, etc., regarding AP English Language and Composition.

In my AP English class, we just read essays and did two rhetorical analysis essays. How are your AP English classes? To any self-studiers, how are you in preparing for the exam?

My class hasn’t done ANY multiple choice practice at all. All we have done is read books and essays and done timed writes talking about the rhetorical strategies the author used to develop his/her point…Is this bad?

well what i do is i read the questions before i even read the passage, so i can box words like EXCEPT, NOT, etc and also so i have a general idea for what i will be looking for in the passage. but i dont spend more than two minutes or so doing that. then i read the passage, and underline relavant parts, so that when i go back to the questions, i can immediately find what i need and move on.

You are going to need to practice. A LOT. For me, i needed to practice long passages because i tend to lose focus when im reading some long, dry passage written in small font.

APCliffs, Barron’s, and 5 steps to a 5. I just bought them for MC practice since I fear them a lot more than the essays. Many CCers who study AP English usually buy APCliffs since the MC resembles the real MC of the AP exam.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll have to look into purchasing the other two books. Do you know if I can purchase them at Amazon, or do I need to go to my local bookstore?

You can go to both. Amazon pretty much has every book that you can buy. The local bookstore–most likely, but there are times when prep books can get sold out since AP exams are approaching. However, they are restocking almost everyday.

I’ll look on Amazon then. Usually when I go to my bookstore there are solely a few copies of what I want to purchase, so I think that ordering them online would be more ideal.

So, is there any other way to get better at the multiple choice? Not including the ones I’ve taken in class, I’ve taken 9 multiple choice tests from some review books, and I am still terrible at them.
