2011 Orientation for Transfers

Ready for Thursday?! Im excited can’t wait :)

I have advising bar on my status and I will attend 23/24 orientation. and I was wondering if they are going to clear my bar at the orientation??!!!?!?!?

They said the orientation webpage that they will remove it after you speak to an advisor the second day is open for registration, everyone has that right now

Has everyone’s transcripts gone through? I sent mine once Spring grades were done, and UT still hasn’t updated my classes.

My registration info sheet doesn’t have a final transcript bar anymore, but my Spring credits aren’t updated anywhere yet.

See y’all in a few hours!!!

Wow… My laptop just broke tonight (found out about it 20 minutes ago), so either registration works on android 2.2 mobile phone or I’m gonna be screwed as far as classes. Damn.

they said in an email that they will provide computers for registration if you dont have a laptop.
you should be fine.

Orientation for transfers was pretty much useless for me. Only needed to go to my advisor to clear the registration bar in order to register. -_-

I don’t think that orientation completely useless for everyone. I heard of a lot of redundant questions throughout the day. I’m coming in as a junior from Texas Tech, and I completed two years at a community college (vocational) prior to that. As such, I have a solid understanding of academic policies, integrity, and the “ins and outs” of course registration. Orientation, I felt, was a bit impersonal (no university officials on hand to greet incoming transfers beyond my college’s dean), and a bit long winded. I really didn’t feel that I gathered anything of value from tonight’s “Wing Session” at all. I obtained my student ID ages ago. The highlights for today’s orientation were meeting with my advisor (again), obtaining some phone numbers, website addresses, and a tour of campus - which is lovely. Most of the student orientation advisors were warm and welcoming (with a couple exceptions). I think orientation could be shortened quite a bit, perhaps to a half day of mandatory sessions, and then leave the rest open and optional to those who really need further assistance. Beyond that, orientation made me feel “officially” welcomed to the Longhorn family. I can’t wait to get registered tomorrow.

Does anyone have a bar because they didn’t send in a final high school transcript? My boyfriend is currently at orientation and is frustrated because he’s experiencing this problem. Apparently on his transfer application status the system told him that UT still had his high school transcript from when he applied as a senior in high school. Will the advisors be able to work something out?

The advising session in my dept was absolutely critical. I had a ton of questions and they all got answered. Make sure to sign up for a one-on-one session. Just one example is that my advisor told me I should apply for a waiver for the ugs signature course because its a complete waste of time for transfers and totally aimed at freshmen. She also made me aware of some major changes to the spanish course sequence to gain the required proficiency in addition.

Also she said if I want to add a natural science major with my liberal arts major to go speak to them immediately because if I can get them to give me a major code for registration right now its going to be a lot easier than waiting and then going through the formal application process. Also answered questions about the different years for course catalogs and made sure I had a planned out schedule ready for tomorrow. My dept advisors told us we didn’t have to go to the wing meeting as most of us could sense it was going to be a waste of time. They didn’t lie like the orientation advisors who kept saying the wing meeting was mandatory. Umm, no, it wasn’t.

Also we got a bunch of free stuff and free information. Keep in mind that those who visit this board have done more research and planning than most other students as evidenced by the fact that were here. There was lots of good information for those who might now already know the ins and outs of the registration system.

Finally, I saw a lot of people make friends today. I wasn’t talkative because I only slept 3 hours last night but I enjoyed meeting a few people in my dept and especially was happy to meet my dept advising staff.

Oh, also found out that we can register from our mobile phones right at 1 pm. One of the dept. adviser actually brought it up before I did which was awesome.

I was pretty much alone all day and didnt really meet anybody. Wonder how it will be in class :frowning: I have no friends that are still in school so hopefully I can meet people in my classes.

cherry- I think it’s a lot harder to find friends in college. Everyone usually wants to stick to themselves and get their stuff over with. Sorry you had to be alone!! :(

yeah I think you’re right, hopefully since there was only about 12 people in the major specific meeting Ill get to know some of them during class.

cherry–it’s not terribly hard to find friends in college if you attend events, find study groups, and join clubs. You’ll find that people like you will also fall into your areas of interest, and you’ll be able to make friends in no time  Good luck!

Thanks UTAustinR, yeah I was thinking about joining a couple of groups :)
