2011 RSI Discussion

^ I applied to both. Scientific research is my primary passion, but I love debating and contemplating philosophical thoughts/views. I would feel enriched at either, but unfulfilled if I don’t get in a research program this summer.

any new yorkers on this thread

wahh so nervous. is there even a slight possibility that some states might get it today?

Wow, I’m a bit surprised at them mailing decisions this early given that they extended the deadlines, but I’m sure not complaining :P

Lurking this thread, there’re some extremely well qualified applicants, and the level of advanced coursework (primarily in math) is effin crazy! I definitely don’t have that level of courses taken (lowly Calc BC for me, haha), but I do have a couple of published papers, a few 1st in States for science fair, and a two excellent recs. Dunno if that’ll be enough though, but it’s all too late at this point and we’ll see in a couple of days!

Worst case scenario, you can research at a local university, take cool courses, chill with your friends, hit the beach, etc. Wait what, worst? :P

^^Well, if you can’t get in with those stats (1st in states science fair, published author 2x), then we’re all doomed. Guess my app is not so impressive now. Oh well… :(

Yeah… every single Rickoid boasts an impressive resume, and I’m sure that the majority of the kids who don’t get in have great resumes as well. =/

It’s a bit annoying though that they choose those who have already accomplished something, instead of giving opportunities to those who haven’t had the chance to do something.

Admissions to anything is a game, and not really a fun one to play.

Umm…thanks. Now I feel even worse, LOL! Do perfect SAT scores help? Or college math courses at age 14. Please say yes!!

Nah boredinschool, I disagree, and am sure your app is pretty impressive! But as NotSoProdigious said, lots of kids with great resumes get in, and lots with great resumes don’t. It probably comes down to some very small factors of individuality, to the point where acceptances and rejections in the top tiers of students seem almost arbitrary :/

If letters really were mailed on Saturday (crossing my fingers that they were!), maybe a Tuesday/Wednesday delivery time for the first states?

wait results are out!??!?!

boredinschool: perfect SAT scores help, of course, but they’re in no way a huge factor (probably less helpful than in actual college apps). And college math courses would definitely be helpful, grats to you on having them!

No one knows anything for sure about decisions. The person who originally posted that s/he called CEE also ■■■■■■■ on another summer program thread and admitted to it, in order to get some excitement going on the list. I think we are playing that “OMG, decisions are out” game… a power trip for some.

Ahhh, did he/she really? Some ■■■■■■ just want to watch the world burn :P

As much as I wanted to believe him/her, it just seemed too good to be true. Anyone else wanna call CEE and check up on it?

As well… see if you can find a phone number on the CEE website… (don’t think anyone on this list called…)

chiiilll everyone, i can guarantee that letters will arrive by march 31st. only 24 more days.

Yeah the guy ■■■■■■■ before, but I know him personally. He told me called so I’m inclined to believe him.

I don’t have any exactly distinguishing features, but I do have 3 years of research experience at a lab. My essays were hopefully entertaining as well.

Good luck to everyone.

do the RSI people care about non-science EC’s like colleges do or is it pretty much jsut scores, research exp and essays? jw… :P

I would expect they would care about that - as in it shows that you can give back to your respective community and that you have good work ethic/dedication.
In all honesty, I think everything matters.

Hmm, I called 703-448-9062 with a question once before, and they directed me to someone involved with RSI. If anyone wants to give it a go, let us know what they say! But otherwise, I’m inclined to just chill like Lovex says for a bit.

muskrat: My guess would be that they take it into consideration, since there is an entire essay question dedicated to it. As to how influential it is, I have no clue at all, sorry bro. But I do think it’s more than just scores, research experience, and essays - there’s an overall goal of you contributing to the entire RSI experience, not just your ratings in three categories. Pretty much what SemperFidelis said

I also think your chosen field of research might be taken into consideration. It seems the CEE is very biology focused. I don’t know if that means more kids in RSI do biological research or not. I mean, my son chose optics as one of his areas and they might not even offer that as an area of research…but what do I really know? Not much. :-)
