2011 RSI Discussion

svparent…

what are your credentials…maybe that will help say if you are accept or waitlist

SVParent - send an email to Maite since she seems to have started the facebook group.

alternate…haha kind of really happy though. i wouldn’t have asked for anything more. i mean, even if i did get accepted, i would’ve had to contemplate about whether i was really going to go or not because of my other duties over the summer.

alternate<33

000000, they hand-wrote my name too!

Lol, so are pretty much all of the alternates on this thread? Or are there more of them than we thought? And is everyone staying on the list?

I also heard there were 10 alternates total, but that was from another RSI applicant. Maybe someone can confirm that figure with Maite.

Reject :frowning:

Thanks so much to tsubomi, greenbean and palaoa for your words of encouragement - they mean a lot to all of us

Maybe I’ll see you guys in Cambridge for college ;)

Emailed Maite, apparently around 30 alternates were picked, so that explains why there are so many of us

sounds like RSI wants you to be proud of yourselves. Good for your morale, is nt it?

Haha I mean it basically means that maybe around 28 of us were de facto rejected like everyone else…so no, not really?

I suspect it can be used in MIT applications.

As a parent, I am quite disappointed that RSI does nt actually explain their process of selection. I see that the original vague premise of having a certain PSAT score and an interest in research is evolving to a high level of pre achievement in research as the main selection criteria at this point.

I literally threatened, cajoled, blackmailed my kid into writing the essays although she was sure that despite a 23x and 23xx she would nt make it based on the promised interest in research as opposed to award winning science fair projects. May be she was correct in the assumption although I chalked it upto reluctance in spending the time to write the essays.

For those of you turned down or alternates, there is life beyond this application. If there were 900 overachieving applicants to RSI with only 47 seats, bear in mind that there are 1600 admissions to MIT with 1100 seats or 2000+ admitted to Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford for 70% of seats for the number admitted. So all of you have a very good chance of getting into any of your #1 school choices and this is just a blip.

All of the essays are reusable for college, scholarship, special combined program applications. You have more practice thinking about those arcane essay topics no one normally pays attention to until September. There are many colleges out there who have additional essays beyond the common app requirements and so whatever essays you wrote for different summer programs can be useful.

Good Luck.

About my child’s credentials:

PSAT - 2400, SAT - 2390, AP - 7 AP courses with 5+, bunch of extra-curricular.

USAMO qualifier 2007-2010.

SVParent - no mail yet? Have tried calling Maite? It sounds like your kid should be in.

I’m on the west coast, and mail comes in at around 2:30pm - hoping and praying my child gets in.

^ do you know for sure that the application was received by CEE?

Received an Acceptance!

What is Maite’s contact info?

congratulations SVParent!

I got an alternate letter, name crossed out and handwritten as well haha…

so what do you think the chances are for alternates? :/

I doubt they’ll take more than three or so alternates (and probably less than that), as very few people decline the offer to go to RSI (I do know one guy who did, but it was to go to black MOP, and I suspect that most people declining the offer will have similar reasons); so based on ~30 applicants, you’re probably looking at anywhere from a 0-10% chance.

(this is just an educated guess though).
