2011 RSI Discussion

Don’t worry too much about field/subfield. Like buzzer11 said before, this is used AFTER you’re admitted to match you with a mentor closely aligned with your interests.

If you’re REALLY WORRIED about field and subfield (like I was last year), you could look on the Intel Science Talent Search categories to get a general idea ([Intel Science Talent Search (STS): Intel Science Talent Search Categories](http://sciserv.org/sts/students/categories.asp))

buzzer11 wants a break from answering questions ;)

@JonValjon: Biochem and medicine are fine, and you don’t need to have a research project in mind. Your mentor will formulate a project for you. My essays were humorous and quirky in some parts, but very serious in others. Just let your own voice shine through

@itsme123: For the fee waiver, just check the box, no extra documentation is required. If you want though, you could always attach a short note (few sentences), describing your circumstances.

@prateeksach: I would advise against a resume. Just integrate your awards in your essay paragraphs.

@pinkumbrella10: I sent all my scores, but others at RSI witheld some. The standardized testing bar is high - the average PSAT math score for RSI last year was 79.

@momo899 and sunshower212: I’m not sure, since the RSI directions said to include them in an entire package. If it’s REALLY REALLY not possible to get your recs in, I would maybe send an email to the CEE explaining your situation and/or include a note with the separate recs explaining what happened.

In case anyone else has a problem with recommendations:
I emailed RSI and they said that if you can’t see your recommenders they can email their letters to rsi@cee.org.

On a side note, was anyone else bothered by the fact that the application used the word “principle” (“principle intellectual and personal strengths”, in the rec form) when it should be “principal”? I mentioned it (politely) as a postscript in my email, and the VP of programs at CEE responded, “I am aware of the spelling issue and the context is correct for our purposes.” I agree, if their purpose is to make diction errors and to confuse the concepts of diction errors and spelling issues.
(Not to mention that they made the typo “engineeering”. Spellcheck, people, spellcheck!)

Sorry if this has already been answered, but for the parent/guardian release form, are my parents supposed to sign saying they will financially support CEE or volunteer? The clause seems a little definite doesn’t it? Is this signature required in to submit the application anyways?

Thank you tsubomi  haha

@sunshower: they are fully aware of the spelling mistakes, and it is general consensus for applicants to not mention it to CEE. ;)

@bibimbap: My parents didn’t sign that. tsubomi correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s not a necessary signature. (I need to see the app again lol)

@tananana : I think if you apply as a chinese or wathever you are , you have more chance to get accepted , since the Us people who applie are more than the chinese people who apply, u have better chances to be accepted as a chinese.
Mail Mr.maite ballestro, and he will send yur inquirie to the sponsor of the chinese slots

Ms. Maite. She’s a woman. :)

and I wouldn’t be so sure about the logic micho is following because last year both of the girls from China were super beast… But sure, email Maite with your question about your situation.

Question: Do I HAVE to send my PSAT scores? My SAT scores are far superior.

PSAT: 80 CR, 66 M, 74 W
SAT: 690 CR, 780 M, 780 W

Wish I could superscore with these. :P

@buzzer11
Thanks. I just thought it was some crazy clause that binds you for life. haha.

Could someone who is done give the number of words they wrote for each question just to give me a good estimate of how much to write? Thanks.

@ eobaggs; i wrote no more than 2 paragraphs per question. (they vary in size depending on the question)

Thanks! That’s what I was mainly wondering, what questions did you write the most for??

For interesting problems in the field, are we supposed to talk about solved, or unresolved problems? Also, should it be phrased as a specific question, or can we talk about a topic in general?

Thanks for the help! (:

umm i got a 53 on CR, 80 on Math, and 73 on writing on my PSAT this year… should I send this in? i also have a 690 CR, 800 Math, and 710 Writing for my SAT from last year.

should i send in just my SAT or both? the CR score on PSAT is embarrassing…(not that great on the SAT either)

for problems in the field, i choose problems that were not “completely solved.” there’s some research on improving the technologies… but my fields are mostly applied sciences and engineering, so problems can never really “be solved.” there’s always a way to improve! i talked about a research topic, but phrased it in a series of different questions i had.

lolz i have like 3500 words total hehehee. i write a lot =P i don’t know how to express interest/passion and be concise at the same time, so conciseness goes first. my longest answers were #2 (almost 1 page) and #5 (like 3/4 page)

ummm how important are recs really?

Couple questions regarding Part I:

What if our school doesn’t have its own e-mail address? Just all of the faculty have one.

Principal’s Professional/Administrative Title? Uhh what is this?

Grade Enrolled (Fall 2010): Is this just asking for what year we enrolled in high school or what? The Fall 2010 thing is confusing me.

And for Part II: are we just listing the courses we’re taking this year? Because it says from 2010-2011.

If someone could answer these, that’d be amazing!

EDIT: @Momo, how’d you write that much on three pages? o.O size 5 font???

@momo899: I would say recs are very important, especially the “scientific potential” question.

@eobaggs: oh my questions :slight_smile:

I put the email address of my guidance counselor

I think I just put “School Principal” ;)

If you’re a junior I would put 11th grade.

For Part II list the courses you are taking this year, including spring semester classes. I think they would like to see how much coursework you would have completed by RSI.

Thanks a bunch tsubomi1993! Yeah, I’m kind of bummed then because I took AP Biology, AP Calc AB, and AP Computer Science A last year as a sophomore. So I can’t put those on, right? :(

ermm i did 11 font times new roman with like 0.3 in margins hehehehehe but i skip a line between each question. xD

ermm the principal information thing, i just gave the form to my principal and told her to fill it out hahahaha.

for courses, i put everything i have done up until this year… is it only this year’s couses?

anyone would like to suggest what I do with my PSAT scores (53 CR, 80 M, 73 W)?
to send or not to send… only if i can take out the mediocre CR score!

0.3 margins hahaha nice.

And yeah, my bad, I read it wrong. “through the end of the 2010-2011 school year.” So everything from Freshman, Sophomore, Junior.

And for your scores, I am in the same situation as you kind of, where my SAT scores are better. I’m probably only going to send my SAT scores…

Can you guys write your names and the country you represent and all your skillz if you are joining rsi this summer:P it would be fun to know each other before, If , and i say if we get accepted :)

I am MICHEL KHOURY , LEBANON.

if we take an AP course, should we just check college?
