2011 RSI Discussion

yeah does anyone know what the deal with unofficial and official transcripts are? what’s the difference?

@PantherTrax: Thanks!

@pinkumbrella10: An official transcript simply means your school prints out your transcript, puts it in a sealed enveloped with their school address on it, and stamps it with the words “official transcript” or something like that. An unofficial transcript means printing out another copy for you to send in without the words “official” stamped on it. Lol thats really it.

well to put it this way i think i spent about 8-10 hrs total on my essays so far

oh umm my counselor signed the back/seal of the envelope is that official or unofficial?

2 essays 3 hrs so far

“School should send certified trascript and test scores.” When do they have to send them by??? Or do I just get them from my school and include them in the envelope?

So one of the teachers doing my recommendations said that he won’t be able to write it on time. I emailed RSI and they said to just send what I have, since the rec won’t get there in time for selection. Even though I do have two recs, one is from an instructor of my online linear algebra course, and has next to nothing about my personal characteristics. I’m feeling like this is pretty hopeless, since getting 1.5 recommendations is not exactly ideal or representative of a capable student.

I’m still going to work on my essays and turn in the rest of the application, but I’m expecting rejection. :frowning: At least I’ll be able to reuse material for my other summer program applications…

Hey all you RSI applicants!

There’s a summer program that I’m suggesting you all try for in addition to RSI. It’s very competitive and physics-based. Here’s the link:

[The International Summer School for Young Physicists - Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics](http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/en/Outreach/Students/The_International_Summer_School_for_Young_Physicists/)

Sorry I haven’t been on in a while… tsubomi took over for a few days but now she’s making me come back :P

@pinkumbrella: biochem definitely is a field.

@chrxswxN: I’m not sure how much each part of the application “counts”, but I would imagine that standardized test scores are a considerable factor. At RSI this past summer we had three perfect scorers on the SAT, a bunch of 2390s, and a whole bunch of people who scored >2300. I guess that could be an indication that test scores are a big deal, or it could just be indicative of a strong positive correlation between test scores and other great characteristics about the applicants. About GPA, however, I really have no idea.
As for how many people apply, I guess if we assume a 5% admit rate, and since about 50 domestic students are accepted, we have about 1000 applicants. Which seems reasonable.
And the highest math/science class for an average RSI student: It really depends. I mean some people went all out on the college courses (coughtsubomi1993cough), and some people haven’t taken any at all. I know most math majors have taken multivariable calc, and one of either discrete, linear algebra, or differential equations.

@JonValjon: No, you do not have to rewrite the question. Save valuable space. and if I’m not mistaken, you can unofficially report your scores by the deadline and then send in an official report… that’s what I did with my Chemistry SAT subject test.

@ketracer et. al: You ask CollegeBoard to send your official reports for you. I think RSI has one of those college codes.

@pinkumbrella: your counselor signing the envelope usually means its official, but sometimes they do that for unofficial transcripts, too, so it’s hard to tell.

Hey buzzer thanks! Okay last question before I submit the app…do we have to put our names on our essays, like a MLA heading and all that?

What is RSI’s code for sending official reports? Does anybody know the actual code, because I tried searching Research Science Institute in the field in the “Send Scores” window, and there were no results…

Umm my guidance counselor just sent the official scores with transcript. I believe they are on the transcript itself which has been stamped official. However i think my SAT II is on a different sheet of paper from where she got it from the database…is that okay?

NspiredOne, that’s OK. PantherTrax, try asking your guidance counselor to include the scores. I don’t believe they accept CB score reports.
Jon, there’s no need for a full MLA heading. Putting your name in the header might be a good idea, though, just in case the pages get separated.

would it be bad if I included the official transcript, if that’s what she gave me?
also what if i have no knowledge of computer science or research. i have nothing to write for the computer science/data question. would school labs count?

I also have another question:

Are our teachers supposed to sign the envelope? It just says sealed envelope…

And I think this was covered before, but what if our teachers folded the recommendation into a small envelope? The instructions are pretty broad in terms of “Do not fold application.”

I think it’s standard procedure for teachers to put rec letters in small envelopes and sign the envelope but I don’t see any serious setback if they don’t…and I’m pretty sure RSI means that you can’t fold the main pages of the application and you just need to put the whole application into a large envelope.

Haha, this depressed me: [How NOT to do your RSI application The Uninteresting Chronicles of a High School Student](How NOT to do your RSI application | The Uninteresting Chronicles of a High School Student)

@eobaggs: I know!! I saw that too and it totally depressed me…that person was basically staying that you shouldn’t apply unless you’re already a super-smart-research-acclaimed genius (which I’m totallyyy not). T.T But I think that person didn’t get in so they were trying to give tips based off of the ‘supposed’ flaws in their application and what other people have said.

@roseyrox22
Thank you. (: Yeah, my teachers didn’t sign the envelopes, and I’m not exactly sure if they were supposed to. Did any previous RSI acceptees not have their letters of recs signed?

omg wow… that was sad. my chart is like filled with 4 things :frowning:
though they are all good
they were really good advice though
how are people formating theirs? i have 2 questions, the first two question, left and only half a page
ALSO CAN BOTH FIELDS BE CHEMISTRY? or does it have to be 1 field chemistry, the other physics or something different?
