also math/physics/chem majors with mostly A’s in their major prereqs (with all possible ones complete of course) should be fine. i transferred with 3.61 and there are people who get in with 3.4-3.5.

this includes math/econ, it’s not harder to get into than other math majors really.

also, about major prereqs, apparently it’s very rare for math transfers to have them complete? my orientation counselor was surprised that all of mine were done, apparently most cc’s don’t have discrete math and c++.

GPA: 3.61 (improved over time)
Essays: good, talked about my passion for math and especially stats, didn’t outline any career goals
TAP: nope
Prereqs: all complete
EC’s: Some scattered ones, one leadership thing from back in high school.
6 W’s, 3 of them in major-related classes.
A’s in all math classes, 2 B’s and an A in physics.
Accepted to UCLA and Berkeley Applied Math.

Also it doesn’t matter which math major you get accepted to since it’s so easy to switch. I originally planned to switch to Math/Econ.

HAHA ^ wow I just saw the Logic in the name and I guess I linked it with your name. My BAD! I meant JetLogic haha WOW. This why I can’t be an english major my reading comprehension is TERRIBLE.

Yeah I got C++ done a while ago (A). The only non A’s I got where in my first semester so I don’t know if you could really call that an upward trend. I’m taking Calc 3 and Linear Algebra right now (low A in calc right now and a solid A in Linear Algebra). I got A’s in Calc 1 & 2, Econ 1 & 2 as well so my major GPA as of now is a 4.0 .

And how easy is it to switch between Math majors? I’m interested (assuming I get in of course) of switching from Math/Econ to applied math as I’m more interested in the physics/engineering uses of math rather than business applications. I don’t have the physics classes done… but I don’t think they’re pre-reqs for the upper divs so I assume you could complete them while taking your upper divs?

Guys, I have a question. I didn’t see a point of creating a thread for this question so I came here.

How does the quarter system work. At my CC is the semester system so each class is 2 days a week for 16 weeks. So is the quarter system like every 8 weeks and then you sign up for more classes? if so, are classes longer and rushed or what?

Quarter system: classes are MWF for 50 minutes, or TTh for 75 minutes. Classes go for 10 weeks, then there’s a finals week. For fall quarter there’s also “zero week” before classes start.

Classes don’t feel rushed to me, if anything, semester classes felt drawn out.

If you’ve taken 3 math classes at UCLA, and meet the prereqs for the math major you’re switching to, you can change your math major. It still has to be approved by the department but it’s not difficult.

Anyone wanna chance me?
Bus Econ
3.92 GPA
TAP
All prereqs done
IGETC done
79 units by end of spring
Good ECs
Decent essay (first one was strong, second one was bleh)

@LogicWarrior: So if I wanted to switch from Math/Econ to Applied Math I would need to have the pre-reqs done for Applied Math? It would take me 3 quarters to do the physics requirement (and in the mean time I would be taking upper div math classes that fulfill requirements for both majors and fulfill the 3 math classes at UCLA requirement you mentioned), so I wouldn’t be able to change major until I’m a senior. Do you think they would allow that?

UCeric, I’d take a physics class or two over the summer to be safe, but I’m pretty sure you’re good unless it would delay your graduation date.

Classes you can use for Applied Math and Math/Econ:

Math 170A and B (probability) or Stat 100A and B (statistics). Math 170A is close enough to Stat 100A that you can’t get credit for both.
Math 115A (linear algebra)
Math 131A (analysis)

Thanks for the help! Looking at the requirements for the applied math major considering the classes I’m missing it is still only 16 course. Spread out over 6 quarters it should be VERY reasonable to graduate in 2 years as added up it’s only like 69 units of classes, I would have to tack on a few extra classes just to hit 180 units. Looking at the courses in the general catalog a lot of the classes in the applied math section look really cool, I would definitely want to take 135, 143, 146, 164 and 167. Ha I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself I actually have to get in… fingers crossed.

I applied to aerospace engineering. its really hard to find threads related to my major here. haha.
i was in college for 4 years(almost 1 year for ESL, i wasnt planning to stay in US then) and will have about 90units done by the end of this spring. so far, i have 3 F’s and 3 W’s, where2 F’s are in non-transferable ESL and the other F in freshman comp. which i retook and got A later. i dont have good academic records in my early years at college. i tired to keep up in recent years and have had good grade trend.

my transferable gpa now is 3.86 with one B in basic guitar and one C in computer information(microsoft excel and acess). so far I got all A’s in my pre-req classes and i have one physics class left to be done this semestIer. also, taking statics tho the class doesnt articulate :<

i know its kinda reach for me to apply to this major at UCLA, considering my prolonged stay at CC and bad past records, i wanted to give a shot.

My alternate major is Sociology, but I’d like to change to History if I get in as my alternate. Would I be allowed to take Intro to Historical Practice (the prereq for pre-History majors) in my first quarter?

I’m actually not interested in pursuing law, though that may change in time. Teaching -and subsequently academia- have cropped up in my head, naturally; however I’ve always been more interested in government and administration; though positions of any significance are highly competitive. I’m hoping to continue my postgrad in the UK, and hopefully become a resident of the place.

As of now this is the bulk of what I consider the Grand Idea. We’ll see where it goes in less than three weeks, haha.

@shinra: Is this for UCLA? Sociology is an impacted major mate, and you can’t place an impacted major as your alternate
You said your major was Bus Econ? That’s a competitive one indeed. Hopefully you get in! I’m sure you’ll be able to switch into History once admitted.

Hoping to get into UCLA as a philos major. Have a 3.83 currently, work 50/60 hour work weeks and I am taking 20 units to meet the 60 unit transfer req this semester. There is only once philos course that articulates between my CC and UCLA

Are you sure you can’t have an impacted major as an alternate? Tbh, I just put Sociology as my alternate because the prereqs were fairly easy. I applied as Bus Econ, but I plan to go to law school after graduating, so I won’t be too bummed if I don’t get in for that major. I already know Bus Econ is a total crapshoot anyway.
