Yup… who’s stupid idea was it to apply for Global Studies in the first place??? Oh yeah…er…D’oh!

Still… at least I didn’t apply for Business Econ, right?

@JustinCalifornia. but thats not one of the MAIN factors right? especially in a non-impacted major, or a major that doesnt have that many pre-reqs. im asking cuz some majors have way more or wayyy less pre-reqs than others. so finishing IGETC, finishing most or all of ur major pre-reqs, and ur OVERALL GPA still matter much more than major GPA right?

From UCLA’s TAP FAQ:

I’m probably a very, very high reach. I’m expecting a rejection, so not really worried about it haha.

3.73 Business Econ / Econ
IGETC Done
Pre-Reqs done
EC: Admin Assistant to the Chief Scientist for Exploration Technology at NASA Ames

are these decisions still expected on April 21st? I get to drop a class if (when) I’m rejected from UCLA that is not needed for my UCSD TAG.

i know major prep GPA is a factor. im just saying its not AS important as IGETC, completion of major pre-reqs, and OVERALL GPA. they look at those 3 things first, and then they look at GPA in ur major GPA right? cuz what if someone has a 4.0 in their major, but like a 3.4 GPA overall? would they still have a high shot of getting in? haha im not talking about myself tho. i already have IGETC, and all my major (philosophy) pre-reqs completed and a 3.82 overall GPA.

Actually, IGETC doesn’t play a huge role in the admissions process. You need to have your UC english and math courses, but that’s all that matters. If you have to choose between IGETC classes and major classes, always choose major. IGETC can wait.

so, based on what we know, what do you think is the number one most important factor in the admissions process? is it overall GPA? or completion of major pre-reqs? or something else?

Completion of major prereqs
Overall GPA
Major GPA

These are the three key factors. There are a few caveats (e.g., not having your UC english and math class may make you ineligible), as well as a few wild cards (TAP, extraordinary ECs or personal statements, etc).

If you have all major prereqs completed, a high overall GPA and a high major GPA, you’re safe for nearly every major. If you don’t have one of those, a wild card might be able to make up for it (particularly TAP, which can be huge).

This thread is some good stuff. Partially because the title of it isn’t OFFICIAL UCLA ACCEPTANCE AND REJECTIONS.

@nick_scheu for my case, i think my wild card would be my personal statements.

yeah, well the only thing that kinda worries me is my major GPA in philosophy. Up to the transfer application update, i took 3 of the 4 UCLA pre-reqs for philosophy. my major GPA in philosophy is 3.34. I got 2 B’s, and 1 A. I also got 2 A’s in 2 other philosophy classes that are not pre-reqs (A in phil 1, A in phil 5). im currently taking the 4th and final pre-req and will be finished by the end of spring 2011. so i will be done with all the major pre-reqs. Is that gonna affect me much? However, I do have an overall GPA of 3.82. and the avg. overall GPA of philosophy majors who were accepted last year was 3.54. so will my 3.34 major GPA break me even with all major pre-reqs completed and a high 3.82 overall GPA? and philosophy is a non-impacted major anyway. so yeah, idk…

Question: how difficult is it to switch/change majors at UCLA for transfers? I’ve heard that it can be difficult. Personally, I applied as an American Lit major which is in the English dept. If I decide to go to UCLA, I may switch to English. Since they’re in the same department, would this make switching a bit easier? thanks

in terms of ur major GPA i think you should be okay if it’s a 3.8+ and of course if your overall gpa is also high.
i don’t think someone with an overall gpa of a 3.2 but a major gpa of a 4.0 will get in as a psych major to ucla. you’re overall gpa + # of pre reqs finished is a major factor.

i feel like a 3.8+ is good (for both overall and major gpa)…esp if u have tap.

(my theory only applies to impacted majors like english, history, psych, biochemistry, soc, poli sci, and bio but NOT the HIGHLY impacted majors like bizz econ, econ, and communications (because u usually need a 3.95+ for those 3 majors), and obviously if ur major is NOT impacted u don’t need a 3.8+)

but lets be honest, no matter how much someone tells you “don’t worry you will get in” (even if its a ucla rep) you’re still going to worry about it until you get that acceptance letter and know for sure that it’s official lol. esp since we have all heard of those crazy stories of people w/ 4.0s and tap getting rejected.

non-impacted majors are doable with 3.5+ and no TAP, it’s not a guarantee but it’s not an near-auto-rejection like it would be for impacted majors.

Can you guys chance my friend? I have a good friend with a 2.98 gpa applying for berkeley, UCLA, uc davis, ucsc as an anthropology major. Her EC’s are
working at the transfer center at her Community college, volunteers at the share institute for austistic kids. She was diagnosed with celiac disease and that affected her performance at school. What are her chances for getting into berkeley/UCLA?

i am guessing slim to none?

Yeah major prep is important…My brother had a 3.89 and was not accepted into the Economics major because he did not have Calculus 3 done.
