2011 UCLA Transfers: The Central Thread for Discussion and Decisions

Mitch: Yup, Duke is competitive but a little bit better than schools like Stanford or Yale. Their percentages range from 1-4 percent.

usc is about exactly as hard to get into as either UCLA or Cal.

i applied to Occidental, USC, NYU and Columbia and all but Columbia won’t come back until after the UC decisions i am assuming…

HAHAHA i also despise the westside! including venice.

@Pinoiako916

Overall, USC is slightly harder to get into. Of course this is just looking at the average admit rate. UCLA’s CLAS admit rate was 31.45%.

As someone alluded too, specific majors are more competitive such as film and performing arts because there are few available spots. Thus, admittance really depends on major.

doesnt Duke, Columbia, stanford, yale, cornell require sat’s for transfers?

Liz: Columbia’s an actual campus while NYU is just a bunch of scattered buildings. As native New Yorker, I can tell you that the Columbian experience would be a lot better (plus, they are better academically as well.)

Pinoiako: Yup, SAT’s are required.

I believe so. Some schools wave the requirement if you have accumulated more than 30 credits. Generally though, schools such as the aforementioned require the sending of standardized test scores.

@blackmamba8

Yeah. Some of those acceptance rates are very low. I agree with you on the NYU vs Columbia campus experience. For Columbia, you almost get a two in one. The city and the classical campus feeling.

Is UCLA as good as some ivy league schools? check this out [Times Higher Education World University Rankings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Times Higher Education World University Rankings - Wikipedia)

That’s all subjective in my opinion. To be honest, I hate any type of lists comparing schools. Especially, when people use them to base a decision of where to go.

UCLA and Berkeley are among the best national public universities.

EDIT: For example, look where Penn is at #19. The Wharton school is one of the best undergrad business schools in the world, if not the best. However, in this list UCLA nearly beats it by 10 spots.

It’s a given Wharton places more students in top Finance/Business related industries than UCLA. I’m not saying UCLA doesn’t but Wharton sends more of their graduating students into those firms.

Where can you find stats for graduating gpa’s at a given school (uc)?

@Cactusbass

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/default.aspx)

Select Custom Tables and second option: Persistence, graduation, and college GPA by entering class

Only goes to 2008 but it’s a start.

@LizfromHollywood Nice to have company! I also applied to Columbia.

I quite agree with MitchAPalooza about rankings. It’s one thing when a university consistently ranks at a certain spot across all lists, but most of it is glorified bunk.

(But still, I’m fond of THE because USNWR disfavors public schools.)

This ranking ([Washington Monthly](http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/college_guide/rankings/national_university_rank.php)) uses an alternate methodology and puts UCB (#1), UCSD (#2), UCLA (#3), and UCD (#10) over Harvard(#11).

I mean those stats are misleading. It doesn’t account for outliers or all the ****bags whose sole goal is to graduate rather than to do well. Also I think UCLA vs. UCI is somewhat self selecting, which is to say that the applicants with better stats to begin with, who are taken by ucla will continue to have better stats and vice versa… Does that make sense?

I just submitted my SIR to UCSB, even if I get into UCLA it is where I will be happiest! I’m dropping out of this UCLA frenzy. GOOD LUCK to all of you!!!

^ I’m kind of surprised I didn’t SIR yet. Reduce my stress since UCLA is a crazy reach for me. I’m so torn between SB and Irvine though. Ehhh. More stress.

I would have submitted my SIR to davis already but I need to wait until I get paid again haha

@alexajam congrats, i’m almost ready to join you and submit my SIR to UCSB

Why would anyone submit a SIR until they had all available choices in front of them? Even if you have your heart set on someplace, it would be prudent to show patience before making a decision that will impact the next few years and beyond.

@Shellbell, you can defer payment if you want to pay it later, just to get it in there so you can start the process.

@Ella, you’re at OCC right now? I actually graduated from the High School they have on campus, Orange Coast Middle College. Are you from down there? If so, I’d go to UCSB just to get out of there for a couple of years.

@Justin…When you know, you know. I thought UCLA was the ONLY school for me, but after going through the process that I had to go through with this, knowing the campuses, what they have to offer nontraditional students, etc. I know the right choice for me. And a million acceptance letters won’t change that.
