I didn’t mean to be disrespectful. I just ment to say that colleges are looking for students with high GPA’s and scores, not taking into account what other things they were involved with. I would rather accept a kid with an average GPA and score, if they’re involved in many things OUTSIDE of school, because it means they can balance their time and aren’t strickly focused on grades only. I suppose I’m sour about the whole thing, because my GPA isn’t very high, either is my ACT score at ALL, but I couldn’t always focusing on school only. I had a job, orchestra, and coaching a cheerleading team to keep my mind on too.

You definitely make a good point. I know kids involved in like seven clubs at my school. And sadly, they don’t get the same opportunities that other kids with better academics get. A well-rounded student is better than an academically obsessed student.

Exactly. They should be able to look at those of us who have jobs, or have a lot of community service hours and see, “Well, they may not have the most impressive stats, but at least they’re involved in other things, and will get involved on campus.” I just wish colleges would see this. It makes me sad to know that they’ll probably take a study with better stats over me, say, even if I am involved in more. ACT is highly inaccurate, and there is some obvious grade inflation going on in school’s. I mean, a 4.2 GPA? That’s just crazy. I’d rather have strong character then be a genius.

How is a 4.2 crazy? lol. ;]
Anyways, they choose people who work hard for their grades (not saying you don’t :P) and achieve high GPAs AND have jobs, community service, extra curriculars, etc. I’m sure they try their best to pick well rounded students. You have no idea what may be going on in someone else life that prevents them from doing certain clubs, etc. I literally had no money or transportation to do any school funded programs (especially honor society, what a $$$ rack up that is). But on the application it gave people the opportunity to tell UCF their interests and what they like to do, and if they had things that prevented them from doing school clubs/and extra curriculars. I’m so glad that they don’t count that stuff nearly as high as they do grades (I would have been screwed), because I work hard for the grades I get and I know others do too, it doesn’t mean you don’t have a life and interests outside of school activities.
But if you’re worried about that, don’t be because they do take that kind of stuff into consideration.
You can have strong character and be smart…

I agree with WRITEfluidity, high GPAs are easy to earn at some schools and some teachers give out A’s very easily. Also true with the opposite. So it really isn’t a fair judgment of how smart you are/what you can accomplish. Same goes with the ACT/SAT. Some high schools prepare their students, while others leave it totally up to the student. And the tests only judge how well you do ON THAT TEST. I know a girl who has no common sense but got a 2220. High stats don’t ALWAYS mean you’ve worked for it. I can say I’ve tried a decent amount in high school, but I’ve had a lot of personal tragedies my freshman and junior year which threw me off track. Sometimes it is just impossible to pay attention in school when you know there is something bothering you personally. But on top of a mediocre GPA, I have been involved in a lot. Two cheerleading teams, dancing, after-school job, community service, babysitting and more. WRITEfluidity simply stated SHE would rather have a well-rounded student if it were her choice. Don’t be offended just because you have a high GPA, that wasn’t the point. The point is that being involved in a lot obviously does make it harder to excel academically, and it shows that students know how to manage their time and like to be involved in their community.

If that was directed at me, where did I say I had a high GPA? lol I don’t think I would consider a 3.5 high. And don’t worry, I wasn’t offended. I was just trying to state that you can have a high GPA and also have done other activities outside of school clubs. I would also choose a well rounded student, but I think I would focus more on a well rounded student with a higher GPA, why would a college choose a well rounded student with a 3.2 instead of a well rounded student with a 4.0, what are they supposed to get out of the application? You can’t put your personality in a box and ship it to them. That is why they have essays to show that tragedy and to get an understanding about why you couldn’t participate in activities, or why you didn’t have such a high GPA.
Sometimes I really hate writing my opinion on a forum because people read what you write and get offended just because you didn’t say something a certain way.

I appreciate you making assumptions about my mood also. And being in a lot of activities does NOT make it hard to excel academically…if you manage your time correctly as everyone keeps saying.
^ This is not being offended just to make it clear. TBH I’m perfectly content right now playing FEAR3.

EDIT: Was that too snarky? blehh. >_<

It definitely does make it harder to do well in school when you have many other things to worry about, regardless of time-management skills. I didn’t make any assumptions about your mood either and sorry if I came off as attacking you, lol that wasn’t my goal at all. I guess I’m just a little too opinionated about the topic. That’s why I hate how over the internet you can’t hear the tone of my voice, I just sound like a ***** either way I type it, but I swear it wasn’t supposed to be that way. The personality in a box made me giggle… if I could do that I definitely would and I plan to make my personality come out in my application. You know what ****es me off too? My whole school career I’ve always been told a C is supposed to be average… now that I’m looking at colleges, I know none of the schools I look at would even consider a 2.0 GPA. Just felt like I should get that out there. I feel jipped! Even though I don’t have a 2.0 lol.

Okay you just made me feel better. Sorry I think I’m PMSing or something. That’s why I always try and type in smileys or something because I think it tends to make what you’re saying go through a bit smoother so you don’t sound like a total ******.
Yeah, my mom went into my brothers school one time when he was in highschool and he was getting straight Cs with a D here and there and the guidance counselor actually asked what was wrong as if it was normal. Unfortunately she didn’t pull him out of that lame school then. :|

I think we can all agree on one thing, though: We really really REALLY want to get into UCF:) I guess all we can do now is send our things in, cross our fingers, and hope for the best. frankly, right now, I’m lucky if they don’t straight out reject me. I’m actually HOPING they defer me, so I can show them that I am a good student…I hope, lol.

@WRITEfluidity

Lol tell us ur stats. I don’t mind chancing you. Really, your stats may not be as bad as you think they are.

Ah, believe me, they ARE. Just recieved my report card, and was very dissapointed. I have a 3.25 GPA. This year, and last year, was a struggle for me. Last year, a close family friend died of cancer, and this year, another very close family friend got cancer (He’s expected to have a couple weeks left to live, as of late). My ACT score was 20. That was with no studying, or anything of the like. I took it again in june (After studying as much as I possibly could) and am awaing the results, so we’ll see. I have 300+ hours of community service. I have a job, am a coach for a cheerleading team, as well as a camp counsler. I have been playing violin for nine years (soon to be 10) and have won ‘superior’ ranked awards for solo’s I’ve competed in. I have wrote 2 full novels, on my own time, have won author of the month, a young author award, and was asked to send in a piece of writing to ‘teen ink’ magazine. I couldn’t finish it in time (Around the month the family friend died…farthest thing from my mind). My senior classes compose of three advanced placement classes…I think that’s about it. I really, REALLY want summer B of 2012. I don’t even mind if they defer me! It’s better then being straight out rejected. I’m also writing my two essays, choosing the bumb in the road topic (asked about a 'bump in the road, and the circumstances) and will talk about the death of the family friend (Which ultimatley let to my grades plummiting drastically), and either why I wish to attend UCF, or what quatlies I can bring. Unsure yet. I feel like the only thing I actually have going for me are the awards I’ve won, and community service. That’s nothing compaired to grades and GPA though…Also, I am out of state, though consider in state (born in sarasota) and have florida pre-paid, if that needs to be known…

WRITEfluidity I have hope you’ll get in. You’ve accomplished things most kids and adults can’t say they’ve done (two whole novels? wow.). You’ve got more things going for you than things against you. Explain your circumstances and they’ll understand and take it into account. I hope your ACTs turn out good and hope that once you turn your application into them, you won’t have long to wait. :)

Thanks a lot:) I’m crossing my fingers. And don’t worry, you’ll be fine, too:) I have faith that, somehow, we can all get into UCF. Hopefully…possiably…maybe lol. Nope, staying postive, we will!

I’ve already downloaded a sample common app and i’ve went through it. The new one doesn’t come out until August if I’m not mistaken.

Oh, I’ve already been accepted, lol, I’m going in for Fall 2011
But thanks! haha

Ciaraxo…I’m so jealous lol. Do you know of anyone with pretty low stats accepted for summer? If I can add on to this hope, it would be great:) ah, you’re going to love ucf!

One girl I know personally is going in for summer with a 3.4 GPA and a 23 ACT, she had a pretty good community service list. I don’t know too many people from my school that are going to UCF, so sorry I can’t help more.
Yes I know! I went to orientation last week, ahhh sooo nice, I can’t wait until the first year of classes is over so I can actually start stuff that involves my major. And I want to join so many clubs, it’s going to be so fun!! :D

Hum…I wish my history teacher could have rounded my 89.6% up to a 90…I’d have close to her GPA…I just hope they read my essay:/

I think you have a chance. Also I never understood how applying for summer is better. I tend to hear that it doesn’t matter which term you apply to
