Horatio Alger was a man who believed in rags to riches stories; in fact, Alger wrote almost exclusively on this very concept! In accordance with Algers view of a prosperous tomorrow, the Horatio Alger Association annually offers generous scholarships to low-income students. These scholarships are for high school seniors that will be graduating this spring (high school class of 2012) and have a demonstrated financial need (usually $50,000 or less, although the website states there is some flexibility as to the actual number).

To apply for this scholarship program, an applicant must submit an official high school transcript, a letter of support, a copy of their parent/guardians federal tax return, an income verification cover sheet, and certification forms (part of the online application). All application materials must be handed in by October 30, 2011 for consideration.

This program is interesting in that there is no set amount an applicant can win; each state has different scholarship amounts. For example, California had 37 $4,000 scholarships awarded last year, Texas had 7 $5,000 scholarship awarded, New Jersey had 14 $5,000 scholarships awarded, and New York had 25 $5,000 scholarships given out.

All paperwork received by HA in time to be considered! This would be an amazing award…
I wonder how many applied this year. I know there are to be 104 national winners but what are the state numbers? I would be honored to receive any recognition from HA. It’s going to be a long painful wait! Ha!

I applied! It was one of the simpler applications; very straight-forward. I’m excited to hear back, not just from Horatio Alger, but any of the other scholarships that are included if you submit by the Nov. 1 deadline.

I’m really excited about HA as well. I feel like I actually have a chance to win this scholarship, or at least the local one. Good luck to everyone!

I got a call today (to home phone which was supposed to be disconnected today!) from Horatio Alger to notify me that I am a 2012 national scholar!!! I can not tell you how shocked I was, I never expected anything. I had such a terrible week and it completely shifted by this news. God bless everyone who applied and I sincerely hope you guys will get good news too!

Where is the list of National Horatio Alger Scholarship winners? Is it up on their website? Thanks! and congratulations to all who won the scholarship and others!

How do you know whether you are a state or national winner??? I got an email stating: Congratulations! The Horatio Alger Association is pleased to inform you of your selection as a 2012 Horatio Alger Scholar! But I have no idea if I was a state winner or a national winner? Does it even make a different???

They extended the Tennessee deadline until April. I don’t know where that leaves my daughter. Were there not enough applicants or were they not good enough? Can she rework her application or is she done?

Sent an email to find out a few things…if they answer any or all, I’ll post.

I am curious to know for all you deserving Nat. recipients how many applicants you were competing with! The aspect of overcoming adversity and still standing out of so many who have makes your award extremely special!
