Horatio Alger Scholarship Programs specifically assist high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. While many programs are directed primarily to recognizing academic achievement or leadership potential, the Horatio Alger Association seeks students who have exhibited determination, integrity, and perseverance in overcoming adversity, as well as have critical financial need.
Hello,
I am not a US citizen can I apply?
No, only US Citizens are eligible. Sorry!
Does having significant learning disabilities apply to this scholarship?
@ambkeegan if you also have critical financial need, I believe that would count.
“seeks students who have exhibited determination, integrity, and perseverance in overcoming adversity, as well as have critical financial need.”
Have you completed the FAFSA form, even preliminarily and do you know if you are Pell Grant eligible?
If it is for 2016 yes, 2015 no.
@ambkeegan I would apply then - the essays can be used, if tweaked, for other scholarships, so the effort would not be just for this single application. I believe Oct 1 the FAFSA application opens up, so complete it with your family as soon as possible and go from there. Best of luck!
Mom of applicant here…wondering if anyone has heard from the association today??
@Czechman I do not know but my 2015 experience, where we found out close to 1/20 what the results were. My foster son won at the state level, and I know someone who won at the national level. At the national level, if they follow past action, they are funded to travel to a reception in DC, including money to pay for a business appropriate outfit.
Wishing you much luck!
Thanks @NJRoadie! My oldest son actually won at the national level last year, and we received the phone call on Tuesday afternoon, 1/3/17. I was thinking maybe they would make notifications today…I think they are notifying by email this year. Best of luck to all…
@Czechman Do they still do the DC ceremony and the outfit budget?
Where did you son go to school?
@NJRoadie They flew everyone to DC and put them in an exquisite hotel. They had the ceremony, and lots of meetings and teaching sessions, with opportunities to sit and talk with amazing adults who were Horatio Alger winners. Yes, they had an outfit budget of $50ish. My son attends a private college in Oklahoma. What about your son?
Anyone know when this year’s winners will be announced? Also, did anyone else get a semifinalist email?
@HelloThereHola Did you recieve a semifinalist email from Horatio Alger Association? I don’t think they’ve done that in the past…just the actual winners were notified in previous years… first national winners and then state winners a couple weeks later. Interesting…
I also got a semi-finalist email back in December. I’m very anxious to find out the results!
Is there a upper income limit who can apply for this.
@ultapradesh If your child qualifies for Federal Free Lunch they will be OK.
@Czechman
2nd week of January, by email, about 7 AM. This was in 2015 and a state level winner. He also won the Gates Millennium Scholarship.
He is a college junior now, with a 3.9 GPA, has presented original research at a conference “poster session” last spring. He did a summer session program for kids interested in grad school, with a stipend and free housing, also doing research last summer. We are hoping he will do well on the GRE this summer and choose a welcoming grad school sometime in 2019 Very proud of him, he has overcome great adversity in his life.
Yes, I received a semifinalist email on Dec. 13th.
