2012, January 28th SAT: How are you preparing for it?

So far I've gotten my hands on direct hits 1,2 and barrons 2400 along with the blue book. Gruber's Math is coming in the mail as we speak and I'm contemplating buying Rocket Revolution 06-07.

Going to try to memorize 6-7 words a day for the next two weeks and then move on to CR, writing and math.

What strategies and books are you guys using?

Feel free to share.

Cheers,

i’m hoping to improve my Writing and Math scores, so I’m using Gruber’s Complete SAT Math Workbook, The SAT Math Bible and Barron’s Writing Workbook and some practice tests.

Princeton review and past years tests. Read more books (novels) also. :D

^that. Reading tough novels helps immensly. Writing is basically turtle’s guide and bb tests. Math…well just review basic concepts and cut down simple mistakes.

Also a huge brush up of vocab by going through dh and learning more from reading. Thats about it.

If i were you i wouldn’t go through all those words. I think dh is enough. Afterall there are really about 3-4 that are difficult but still enough to miss and get a high score. If your aim is 700+ of course.

I am actually kind of worried about this, because I have invested most of my time for ACT after getting a 1610 on my first SAT. It turns out I want to try SAT again!

my tutor told me to try Barron, but I heard from others that Barron’s practice is digressive from the actual tests and a bit hard also. Is it true? Should I still use Barron?

I have been studying since november since I was scheduled to take it in december but I bumped it to January. IT will be my first time, and hopefully last.

-Taking a one week cram testmasters course (Hopefully this takes me over the hump past a 2300!)
-Gonna go through 10 practice tests in the blue book (2 Down) spread out from now to then
-Working with the barrons critical reading workbook. The questions in it suck, but the extra reading helps.
-Little but consistent math and writing practice (I basically can get an 800 in both of these, but often miss 1 or 2 per test)
-Praying considerably to a god I don’t believe in.

this is my first time taking it too. i pretty much have to take it now or in either may or june…which is something I dont want to do because I’ll have like two chances at taking it. pretty much i just wanna get these stupid tests over with, and hopefully only sit for the sat once :p.

ideally im looking for a 2300+. my psat scores are should be available tomorrow, so hopefully I at the very least broke 200. either way I think i’ll sit down and take the CB online practice test tomorrow.

i was actually thinking about taking the testmasters cram course over winter break too. theres one offered in NYC and its around $600. so i guess that cheap. realistically speaking though, i don’t see myself sitting 12 hours/day in a prep center over the holidays, so i think i’ll self study.

@ AMR
Yeah it was 600$ in jersey too! It is like 6 hours a day, but I guess that is a small price to pay for an elite score. You can probably get a 200 point boost by self studying if you haven’t done it before. I started at a 2050 and am now at a 2200-2250! But I realize that I need some expert help and guidance to push it past 2300. So it might even be best if you don’t take the course, who knows. I also suggest getting the Collegeboard online course. It has an extra 10 practice tests (so 20 total with the book) that you can take. It is also only 80$ compared to the 600$ testmasters course!

@drac

i didn’t know CB had a online course. i may just go ahead and take that then. do you think its worth buying rocket review revolution (its 150$ ish but i heard that the author and book are amazing for CR).

@ AMR

I doubt RR is worth the money. check out my post here:

Just read a lot of Wall street journal or NY times and have a pen in hand to underline and mark up passages. Read for meaning and actively inferring all statements in the articles help.

^ Although, now that we’re getting to be a little over a month before the test, reading a lot might not cut it. The highest CR scorers are ones who’ve developed a lifetime habit for reading. That being said, it certainly can’t hurt.

I got a 2380. My advice is to do as many practice test as you can, and then (this is important) make sure you go over every single missed problem, and ask for help on ones you don’t understand.

Good luck everybody!

^^^^ 2380!!!

i actually hate you -__-.

if i score that then I’m going to go absolutely insane.
