I’m pretty sure it was a mistake. I got the email as well and was previously admitted to the honors college but did not receive a letter about the scholarship

I got the same email today talking about parking instructions for the interview. However I had not been notified of this scholarship before. I’m also in scholars, and to the best of my knowledge (I’m not 100% sure) you have to be in the Honors College to get the Banneker/Key scholarship. So I think Maryland might have had a computer glitch and sent these emails out by accident. However, I HOPE that we are scholarship semi-finalists.

Anyone else have any info???

^^Same I went on there website and it says all Banneker Key semi-finalist are offered entrance into the Honors College which I did not get into. I think it’s a mistake because it’s too good to be true.

Where did hear you hear that interviews were next week? My daughter received this cryptic email also.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/1466494-banneker-key-email-strange-2.html

A lot of people are receiving this email. Me included. I don’t know how to figure out if it is legit or what. I want to be able to contact someone.

I also received the email that I was selected, but I had not received any information previously about the scholarship. I would hope that they wouldn’t accidentally send out this email to us all, I’m sure we were selected. I’ve emailed them and called, but have had no response since. And their voicemail box is full so I’m sure there are lots of people calling. Does anybody know the dates for the interviews anyways?

I just talked to more of my friends who got into UMD, and they all got the emails…So either we are all really smart (unlikely) or its a computer glitch :(

Same email here. No letter

Same email.

I would like to know if there are UMD accepted students who didn’t receive this email to see if they glitched and sent the email to everyone, or if the people who received the email actually could be semi-finalists. I didn’t apply for the Honors College and I received the email today as well. I hope this isn’t a classic case of “this is too good to be true!”

“Hey all, I’m a current B/K student at UMD. One of my friends received this email as well, so I directed him to call Katherine Russell, the coordinator of the scholarship.
She was still in her office at the time, and informed him that the emails had accidentally been sent to the wrong list of students.
I’m not really sure why they haven’t sent out a correction yet, but it does seem to be a mistake.”

We live on the West Coast. My son (Hispanic male) was accepted into the scholars program at Mayland but there has been no mention of scholarships.

Today he received an email with this message:

" Congratulations on your selection as a Banneker/Key semifinalist! "

The it goes on to provide parking directions and driving directions etc.

It provides a time to arrive for interviews but no date.

If this is a computer glitch its really cruel.

Well, it seems from the poster above x2 that this may be a glitch…but i 'm still hoping. If it IS a mistake, I know we all expect this kind of thing NOT to happen, but the folks at UMD are only human. I feel for the person who has to deal with this if it is an error.

The person at UMD that made this mistake will likely no longer be working at UMD tomorrow. I do have to say though that I was so consumed with my own disappointment, I did not think of the person who is responsible for this human error.

I don’t understand though, why not send out another email. So the office is closed? Open it back up if you screwed up and just apologize.

It’s too bad it was an error – but I guess thinking about it now, it makes sense that so many people could not have received an invitation to interview and also the no date thing does make one think that this was in fact a follow up email to a previous email.

Would have been nice if it were true.

Same here, parking information but never received a letter. Does anyone who DID receive letter know when this interview is? Are they all at the same time?

More likely the emails are right, and stack of letters disappeared.

The first B/K event starts tomorrow morning. The e-mail must have been a reminder that was inadvertently misdirected. All B/K semi-finalist receive a full packet via USMail. I’m so sorry this happened. They should have sent a retraction asap.

The interviews are on 2/28, 3/4, and 3/6.

The coordinator of the scholarship said that the emails were sent in error, although I’m not sure why there has yet to be a correction.

wow, im so disappointed now. i knew something was wrong when i got the email with no date. I actually called the admissions office and even emailed the email back. im glad i found this thread to show me the reality…

Retraction letter was just sent out.

My son (who did get into honors) got this email today too – and we thought “this is it…it puts UMD over the edge!” What a roller coaster - first to think that he would get something (and we’re OOS, so we didn’t have high hopes) and then to see that it is just a glitch. It’s too bad that the retraction email could not be sent sooner. Oh well.
