2013 Banneker Key Scholarship

Just got a retraction email. Bummed for us, but as we’ve been pretty diligent about reading everything and keeping track of juicy mailings about scholarships, I had a sneaking suspicion that this wasn’t meant for my child. Not that he isn’t deserving! :)

Good luck to those candidates who got a valid invitation!

They did say in the retraction email that “the good news is that our review for our partial tuition scholarships has concluded and students receiving these scholarships will be notified by mail in the next few weeks.” There’s still some hope for a scholarship.

it was a human mistake - just a rather brutal one. sorry to everyone who was disappointed today, that is just horrible. keep your chins up, talented students such as yourselves are sure to have other offers coming your way :)

cohen2000: The scholarships will not rise to the amount of the B/K so for OOS students, the cost may still be too much for UMD.

cubanita13: I’m sure these students have other offers. Those considering UMD might just knock them off the list due to this fiasco and I wouldn’t blame them. UMD handled this badly and the retraction email could have been written better. Definitely not showing any love to these kids.

Good morning,

I’ll be attending the CMNS breakfast for B/K semifinalist at 9:30 this morning, Feb 28. I hope to meet some of you awesome students and will gladly answer any questions you may have. Have a great visit to our beautiful campus and good luck with the interview :)

From your other posts it looks like like you are a predmed major, are you a junior or sophmore student? Would like to know about the premed classess at UMD, and how is it easy to get them if you are not in Honors college

Hi cpmd2013,

I am a 3rd year chem major following a pre-med track. This is my application year, so there is much to do this spring. I just got my MCAT score  and submitted my mandatory health packet to the
[The Reed-Yorke Health Professions Advising Office](http://prehealth.umd.edu/).
The premed required courses are changing with the new MCAT 2015, so freshman premeds will be required to take a few more classes than I was. The required courses:
1 year of bio w/lab
1 year of physics w/lab
1 year of general chemistry
1 year of organic chemistry w/labs
1 or 2 semesters of math, depending on the medical school
with the new additions of biochemistry, psychology
If you have any AP credit in any of these classes, you may not have to take them at all or you might take an upper lever course instead.

You will have no problems registering for these classes. They are very large with many sections. Not being in the Honors College is not a problem. You can major in just about anything while doing also taking pre-med classes, although many students will choose a major that has pre-med courses included in their plan of study.

A strong application also requires activities outside the classroom, such as leadership positions and community involvement/volunteering. A large university like Maryland makes this easy to do.

Does anyone know what’s going on with the Wednesday interview? There’ll be a snow storm and they said everything is cancelled. We already bought plane tickets and paid for a hotel! ):

@pseudo gah!! that is awful!!! fingers crossed that it all works out for you and everyone else waiting to interview. stupid winter storm saturn.

do you guys think the weather will delay the decision process terribly? oh, i hope not…already so nervous as it is!

Thanks! They moved the last interview day to this Tuesday. So I guess it will delay the decision process by about a week, unfortunately.

@Plumazul thanks for the detailed post. If I need more information can I send you a message

Did anyone recall if they told us when the decision will come out and if it’s through the mail or email?

I believe the date we were given was April 1st, by mail. In past B/K threads it looks as though applicants were receiving their letters a few weeks earlier than that. But with the delay due to the weather, who knows what the new timeline is?

Full Scholarship!!! Came in today’s mail. This is truly incredible.

ahh congrats terpmeup! still waiting…where are you?

In laurel, md.

I just got a full ride, I live in PA! I am so freaking happy right now!!!

I received the retraction email as well. I couldn’t agree more with the previous posts. The email was very unapologetic and rude. The school had many options on damage-control, but instead chose to send a quick, one-paragraph retraction email that rubbed the majority of recipients the wrong way. A simple ‘We’re sorry’ would have been better than the garbage they chose to include.

I also felt that the timing of the emails was very inconvienent. After getting so many calls and emails from confused recipients, the school could have at least sent the retraction sooner. For me, almost 3 hours passed before the retraction came. 3 hours is a long time for someone who has just been guaranteed a full or partial ride to a state university.

I have come to understand that mistakes happen, but the proccess of recovering from them is very critical. This has given me a very bad impression on the University of Maryland system, specifically the financial aid office.

Ughh dude calm down.

Yeah, so what it took them 3 hrs. Maybe they didn’t catch the error quickly. Did you ever think that more goes into sending that one little email to hundreds, or even thousands, of people.

I’m not trying to be rude and I apologize if I come off as so, but stop crying over it. The retraction email was intended to apologize for accidentally sending the first email, not for deciding not to give you the scholarship. Quite honestly, I think you are looking for consolation for the latter.

Exactly. The retraction email was intended to apologize. And it didn’t. After making a mistake that destroyed the hopes of so many students, they least they could do was say ‘I’m sorry’.
