Caltech > MIT.

Ugh, Caltech, It smells like TEXTURELESS DUDES.

Scientists and engineers go to Caltech. People who are scientists and engineers go to MIT.

MIT>>>>>>>>>>>>Caltech

Scientists and Engineers, huh?

I was at Caltech a few weeks ago for an academic comp tournament. Look at the picture I took:
<a href=“ImageShack - Best place for all of your image hosting and image sharing needs”>ImageShack - Best place for all of your image hosting and image sharing needs;

That’s right, your so-called “Scientists and Engineers” can’t even align a bathroom stall lock correctly. I had to hold the door closed with my foot, which was awful and degrading. “Scientists and Engineers”, indeed!

I’ve got 3 finals tomorrow :D

I mean today, actually…

If I get into Caltech, then Caltech > MIT.

If I get into both then MIT > Caltech. :)

@fontaine

I think in many cases there is an inverse relationship between intelligence and common sense.

I agree with HitMan. At least, I hope HitMan is right, because I have absolutely no common sense.

The discussion about athletics interested me enough to create a CC account, since I am a 2014 student recruited for football. Through my conversations with the coach, I have gotten the impression of a sort of push in the admissions process, given that the applicant does have MIT-caliber academics. I saw that some recruits were blogging on here yesterday, what do you guys play and did your coaches tell you anything about admission?

I play lacrosse and he said academics first. If you get into MIT as a student, you can then pursue your respective sport.
Probably worded a bit nicer, but I am not sure if we get any sort of pull, doubt it.
Any EC will give you a push in the admissions process, and athletics is counted as just another EC

@defend51: So have you been like accepted already? Football? Hahah niiice. :)

Of course they get a special push (as long as they are otherwise qualified). MIT has to field all those teams and also be competitive. Otherwise you wind up with a school whose sports are not much better than intramurals (Caltech, Reed). Sports add to the campus environment in a way that benefits all (IMO).

Also, I think its much easier to fill slots in the orchestra with MIT students than it is to fill a football team. So I think a qualified football player may be more valued than a qualified Violinist. All other things being equal I am betting the football player get the nod.

defend51:

1) Need competitive academics, but you know that
2) Probably competitive at the state level at least
3) Coach really wants you for the team
4) Different coaches may have different amount of pull depending on their tenure (longer they’ve been there, the more likely they’re familiar with admissions in terms of people and process), sport (both in terms of profile and success rate), and probably alumni support for the particular support.

then our impression was that things could happen.

Note that there is no separate admission process, no early reads, no likely letters, no assurances from the coach of likely admission or any overt comments from him that he has any special powers.

But, we still got the distinct impression that his support was not chopped liver. Our interactions were not materially different than with other programs where they are much more upfront about their recruitment.

We’re still waiting for EA results, and if it’s a no, then perhaps all of the above is moot, so take my words with that caveat.

If you want more specifics, you can PM me.

BTW, none of what I said is inconsistent with what Matt wrote, via Mollie’s post on previous page. There is quite a bit of wiggle room in what Matt wrote.

@Hitman

That’s pretty much what I meant. Caltech has all intelligence, no common sense. MIT has a perfect combination of both. (Mind and Hand?)

Mind and Hand is the best thing since sliced bread.

ONLY 7 DAYS 1 hour and 10 minutes left guys.

SO Excited!!!

do u think they’ll do something special when there are 3 days, 14 hours, 15 minutes and 9 seconds, or will they do something at 2 days, 7 hours, 18 minutes, and 28 seconds?

@buddy

i doubt it.

@buddy

no

@ Buddy

I think they’ll choose 1 day 6 hours 1 minute 8 seconds
