2015 Application Questions, Comments, and Support

No. I DO!

**** YOU @fullload!!!

Just kidding… B-)

Sorry if I was unclear, my post was in regards to being part of TAP

hey @fullload, I was looking at my notes for something and saw that I had written you can add an alternate major for every campus except Berkeley. It said it was coming from the transfer matrix, so I looked. You CAN add an alternate major as a regular applicant. Page 5.

Great link, thanks. Page 9, last column clearly states UCLA does not consider applicants for alternative major if they do not qualify for their first selection.

As I mentioned earlier, yes, you can add it. I did. But only certain UC’s will consider it if you do not qualify for the first selection. UCLA is not one of them. :(

well maybe that means to put easier one as #1. Who even knows the difference?

@fullload‌

Well I couldn’t sleep so went and looked at that page 9, and it didn’t actually say UCLA does not consider an alternate major. It said generally, it didn’t. There were other UCs that said emphatically no. And we all know the matrix is not always 100% adhered to. So I did a little more digging and found this transfer page. A large part of criteria appears to be completion of major prep work:

"Q: IF I AM NOT ADMITTED UNDER MY FIRST CHOICE MAJOR, WILL UCLA REVIEW ME FOR MY ALTERNATE MAJOR?

A: Since transfer applicants are reviewed based largely upon major-specific preparation course work, UCLA does not usually review transfer applicants for any other than their first choice majors. If you are willing to be considered for another major you can list an alternate major, but listing an alternate major does not guarantee that you will be considered for that major if you are not admitted to your first choice major."

Also another thing I recall hearing at some point is they will consider alternate majors within engineering. If this is true it is most likely due to the sameness of the prep work. That would apply equally to English Lit and American Lit - although unless you really really really want the impacted major - it kind of makes more sense to just apply to the non-impacted and call it a day.

The more I think about this, the more convinced I am they will consider both majors. There’s a reason they chose the word “generally” rather than a straight out no, or only open to TAP.

They’re not going to look at two disparate majors. Psych rejects you and they have to package up the app and send it to the alternate Anthropology, a different dept in a different building. Nope, ain’t happening.

But if it’s already in the same dept and all they have to do is toggle between Am Lit and English, I think they"ll do it. Why not? It’s no skin off their nose. That explains why I heard they’ll do it with engineering. Same dept.

Anyway, you should contact them and see. That’s my two cents…

It doesn’t hurt to put the alternate major, but I wouldn’t count on it actually being considered.

Before you put two in, in you really need to find out the English dept policy on alternate majors. The alternate option only benefits you if you can put the impacted one first and have the other as fallback.

I’m really curious as to what they say and exactly what the overall UCLA policy is re: this issue… [-O<
Logically, it should work, but logic does not always win the day.

I’m all over it and will call the department tomorrow. If they will look at the second one, I’ll put English first and am lit second. Good looking out, Lindy. Thanks. :)

Anyone find it weird that you can’t see your running GPA on the UC application? They kept a running total on the UC preparation application, but after you transfer that all over to the real thing and start entering new grades, you’re unable to see what your GPA is.

I have to use an online GPA calculator, but it sure would be nice if the UCs just totaled it for you so you can see what you have as you move through the semesters through Spring.

Gripe over. Carry on. :)

The University of California does not exist to make life convenient for its students.

You will experience more of this in the months to come, lol

@Cayton‌
I have experienced nothing but cupcakes and rainbows with the UC system :stuck_out_tongue:

@2016Candles‌

Some of us UC students are luckier than others. :frowning: :(

Maybe they don’t want it on the app as they recalculate the GPA after verifying units, and don’t want to get later emails with, “but it said…” ???

@lindyk8‌

Yeah, and your unofficial transcript should have your UC GPA anyway. Well, my school’s unofficial transcript did anyway.

But if you’re like me and have 50 different transcripts, it’s not do neat and tidy.

@cayton, yes my daughter had hers on her transcripts.

@2016Candles‌ :((

@fullload‌ I ran into a UCLA advisor today who said that the paragraph I copied should not be up there and UCLA should be taking it down as it’s misleading. The alt is only for TAP.
Well, I fought the good fight. Can’t say I didn’t try.

I guess since “Ms Sun” said engineering majors have option of alternate, you could call to verify.

Candles, I’m in your boat, lots of campuses which make calculations tough. I liked the UC planner because it had a nice calculation at the bottom. Now I have to go back and forth between campuses and calculators. it’s a mess. But I’m just being picky, if that’s my only gripe, I’m in good shape. :)

Lindy, good to know, I’m just doing Am lit, and English 2nd (for no apparent reason I guess). Playing it safe seems best at this point.
