2015 UCLA Community College Transfer Alumni Scholarship

I’m just reading this super-fast, but did tuition go down $550?

It seems like it is the case as observed by both me and lucky

@lindyk8 yes, tuition went down $555.00 due to the deal with Governor Brown that stated there would be no tuition increase for the next two years.

@LuckyName hey lucky, would you mind rewriting your earlier post? I think a lot of us I’ll benefit from it.

Out of curiosity, did anyone receive an email from the Alumni Scholarship Committee about the video?

@Npham95 what video?

This was what i received today. I thought most scholars should get it as well.

UCLA Alumni Scholarships Program
Dear …,

Congratulations once again on earning a UCLA Alumni Scholarship!

As you may recall, there are over 200 scholarships in the Alumni Scholarships portfolio, and we would like to put your name forward as a candidate to receive one of the named scholarships in our program. This named award is provided by one of our most prestigious Alumni Networks and we would like to offer them additional materials to help them select their scholars.

If you are able, please send us a ~20 second video answering the question, “What does it mean to you to come to UCLA?” You do not need to introduce yourself, beyond your first name, and the video can be cell-phone quality. If you do not have access to video, please send us a headshot and paragraph instead.

Network alumni will be reviewing these materials on June 26, so we will need you to send us your video by Wednesday, June 24, 2015 via email at alumnischolarships@support.ucla.edu.

Please note that if you are selected to receive a named scholarship, this funding will replace your current award.

If you have any questions, please email or call us at 310-794-5180.

Warm regards,

Alumni Scholarships Program Team

Interesting. I see that as blatant racial profiling, asking for a video.

I have no idea why they want a video. That is an interesting method of evaluation. Nonetheless, I’m sure they know mode applicants’ ethnicities.

The thing is all the UCs constantly say ethnicity is never part of the equation, and while reviewers are studying the applications, they have no access to the ethnic demographics as they are hidden (and optional), and applicant names are replaced with numbers. Likewise with scholarships, all ethnic demographics are missing (except in the case of certain scholarships diirected at various groups). Yes, it certainly is not fool-proof because a person could simply note their ethnicity in a personal statement or perhaps it is clear from an email address, etc . Still, asking for a video seems contraindicated based on their published position, as they seem to go out of their way to eliminate any hint of ethnic knowledge. Ultimately, I don’t care one way or the other. Other schools, especially in the arts, sometimes ask for videos. It just seems peculiar coming from a UC.

Hi all, has everyone gotten their FAN? I got mine and I went to check but my Alumni scholarship isn’t there :frowning:

@Npham95 That’s probably normal. I spoke to somebody from Alumni the other day and she stated that we were NOT supposed to receive notice of our scholarship amount on our provisional award letter yet. Why it happened? I don’t know. She doesn’t know. But it did. So that’s the reason why it was probably removed from the FAN. She said the full award amount (this can include the additional $5,000 need based award) would be released in August.

Has everyone heard from the scholarship committee by now? I received an email initially confirming my application, but I never received any follow up selecting/denying my application. I’m assuming the latter occurred… Is anyone else in the same position?

@ilikewafflez Yes, we received acceptance emails in May. Denial letters did not go out.

@LuckyName hi lucky, thank you for your inputs! Just out of curiosity, do you know by any chance the basis they use to determine “need-based”?

@Npham95 They look at your net cost and then grant you an additional award. Up to $5,000 (depends on their budget and how many students need additional grants) is guaranteed the first year and is just added to your award. There is no need for you to do anything, you’ll just see it come August. The second year requires an application.

@LuckyName Thank you! I really hope for a little more from them if not all. I went to look at 1-bedroom and planned to live with only one more person and the cost of living is devastating lol!

Hey, do any of you know someone who won the award before? I want to see how much additional grant aid they typically give. I know it says up to 5,000, but I doubt it actually is 5,000.

Did you even bother to read the previous posts just before yours? Because I specifically stated the answer to your question.

@LuckyName Did you even bother to read MY post…?

Unless I’m missing a different comment, your comment stated how they decide. I already knew that from talking to the alumni team. My question was directed at people who have or know someone who previously won to see exactly what they got. Knowing that the amount depends on their budget and the amount of students who need help doesn’t give me any clarity. The difference between $500 and $5,000 matters a lot right now and I was looking to past winners to give me a ballpark.
