Does anyone know if UT Austin awards merit aid to transfers and, if so, typically how much?
I am currently studying at El Centro College in Dallas. I have a 4.0 on 44 credit hours with another 16 in progress and I am thinking about applying to CNS at UT to do the Mathematics BSA program. I will have completed most of the classes listed on UT’s transfer guide for CNA applicants by the time I transfer. I haven’t been involved in many EC’s because I work full-time, but I am a member of PTK and I am completing the honors program at El Centro. I’ve also done some volunteer work for a local homeless shelter.
I am concerned that I won’t receive much federal aid because I have been working full-time for several years. (I’m an older student.) I don’t receive any federal aid at my current school, but I do have a merit-based scholarship. I’ll definitely need some type of merit aid to swing the cost of UT. Any advice you may be able to give me regarding potential scholarship opportunities at UT will be much appreciated.
I was admitted into CNS - Math today! GPA: 3.70. Total hours: 44
Relevant classes taken: Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3, Physics 1 and lab, linear algebra.
Relevant classes in progress: Differential equations, physics 2 and lab, Macro economics
I’m ecstatic! I had no LORs and okay essays. Good luck to everyone!
So I want to transfer to UT COLA as a Government major, or undelcared.
I currently am taking 15 hours this semester
and 15 next semester
In total I will have 30 hours so do I submit an application before march 1st and then submit my transcript with 30 hours? My college will end on may 12 so will it be too late???
Is COLA harder to externally transfer into than CNS? Also, how competitive of a major is public health to get into? I’m applying for admission next fall. I’m just wondering if anyone knows the average GPA for COLA external admits cause I can’t find anything online.
Hi all,
prospective transfer from ACC here applying for Fall 2017 Moody Advertising. If somebody who’s been in my situation before could chance me, as well as bestow any advice regarding the process, it would be greatly appreciated!
Stats are as follows:
3.8 GPA if I take a W in a non major specific math class, and 3.7 should I end with a B in it. (It’s mathematically impossible for me to make an A in said course).
30 Hours completed by the end of fall 2016, however if I take a W in the aforementioned course I’ll be under the 30 hour requirement until the end of the spring semester.
3 Letters of rec: One from my UT alum history prof who I worked with in testing a new online tutoring service ACC will begin using next year. The other two being from well established central texas PR/ADV professionals.
Resume includes working for several political campaigns, good volunteer work, some pretty solid high school ECs, and on/off work in digital media marketing at an award winning PR/ADV firm for the past 4 years.
Essays: If I can be pointed in the right direction regarding what admissions really likes to see, little things that aren’t enumerated in the prompts, I’m very confident in my ability to right damn good essays. (Although, I want to write one of them about how the advertising of austin as a place to live is done partly through the glorification of it’s party culture, and why doing so is dangerous, as well as the ethical aspect of it)
Any help is welcomed, and best of luck to everyone applying!
Thank you!

Good essays
Tons of extra curricular and leadership positions.
I don’t have an Calc though…
I called the admissions and they said the first round of acceptance will be mid November for people with 30+ hours. I applied and had everything processed by 9/28 and I’m getting so nervous.
After HS in 2013 I went to a small public university in Texas studying Biology (was forced to study Pre-med). Due to depression I ended up leaving school after my second semester (all Fs and FQs both semesters).
Fast forward to now, I am in my second semester of school at community college and will have a ~3.59 GPA and 34 credits at the end of this Fall 2016 semester. I applied to transfer Spring 2017 for 1. Linguistics, 2. Government in COLA. I have 17 credits in progress right now that UT is waiting on.
I have explained my situation in my essays but I worry that the Fs from my Freshman year will be clumped together with my GPA from this beautiful “fresh” start at CC… otherwise, I am confident that I have a strong application.
How does UT distinguish transcripts and GPA from multiple schools for a transfer applicant?
@irltots, they’ll factor in any-and-all transcripts. So if you make a 10 hours of a 4.0 from one college, and a 2.0 from 10 hours at another university, it’ll be averaged out at ~3.0. It blows, I know.
@ssman512 With that being said, how much of an effect does acknowledging the issue in the essays have towards the decision? Is there no way that the committee would see an upward trend in grades? VERY WORRIED RIGHT NOW.
@irltots, it’s really up to the admissions people and how they interpret your essay. You shouldn’t make your whole essay about your grades, but you can mention them and discuss how much stronger you have become, or have someone mention it in a letter of rec.
I asked this question like six weeks ago, but I was hoping to get your opinions once again. I am currently a freshman at Texas A&M University and I am looking to transfer into COLA with the following statistics…
3.733 GPA if I get an A in Calc 1, and a 3.46 If I get a B
2 solid essays
LOTS of extracurriculars ranging from student leadership to internships at hospitals both domestic and international
good recommendation letters from doctors (meaningful, not just BS words on paper) and possibly one from a UT undergrad counselor.
these are my best credentials and I’m praying to god to end calc with an A this semester. Even with a 3.46, do you think I have a shot at COLA? In your opinion, whats the best major for be to go into? Easiest COLA major perhaps? you cannot apply for undecided as external transfers now by the way.
Tbh, I always wanted to go to UT. I got waitlisted for freshman admission and decided I’d go to A&M. This school is good, it’s just not for me. I may transfer to UH for the spring semester cause I’m really not happy here. It’s not the people, it’s me but that’s kinda what’s goin on. Opinions on my chances? @CorpusChristi
