2016/2017 UT Austin Transfer Thread

@wickedwarrior777 @ssman

https://admissions.utexas.edu/explore/academics

CNS and COLA both have indicated:

“Undeclared
(Offers admission only to freshman applicants)”

Yes that’s what I’m saying lol

Anyone know what a competitive GPA for COLA is for external transfers?

@wickedwarrior777 Check this thread if you haven’t already: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/1123920-anyone-get-into-ut-austin-liberal-arts-with-a-3-3-3-35-gpa.html

I’m also applying to COLA for Spring 2017.

My transcript from this semester was just sent to UT this morning. I’m guessing I’ll have an admissions decision within the next week or two? This anxiety is killing me!

@irltots I heard back on Friday, although not dependent on this semester’s grades. Admitted! I hope you hear back soon, the waiting is horrible.

@_pashley Ah congratulations! What’s your major?

Hello everyone! I am a current Austin Community College student looking to transfer for fall 2017! If anyone could chance me, I’d appreciate it! Here are some stats:

I already auditioned in November, but I am trying to get into the department of theatre and dance in the College of Fine Arts. I’m sure I don’t need too high of a GPA to get in there, considering it is primarily based on talent, but it never hurts.
18 credits from dual-credit/early college start in high school, with a current 3.5 GPA
By the end of this semester I will have 31 credits and a 3.6
By the time I transfer I should have 41 credits and hopefully around a 3.7
I have some good essays, great high school ECs and a decent resume.

I know my chances of getting into the dance program itself are based on my dance skills, but I still have to get into UT like everyone else, so any info/advice is appreciated!

Hey y’all! So I transferred from ACC into UT fall of 2016 and I wanted to share my stats so people could compare them. This thread really helped me out during the transfer process so I’m more than willing to help others out who are in same position I was in a year ago. The good news: MOST of everyone on the last thread got accepted, even if it was second choice!

Transferred from Austin Community College
Accepted May 19th, 2016 to 1st Choice

  • Hours: 30
  • Major: Public Relations, Moody School of Communications (2nd choice was Psychology, COLA)
  • GPA: 3.71
  • LORs: Three - House Rep, honors professor, and current employer.
  • ECs: 2 Internships – Comm. Intern in Texas House of Representatives and Comm/Business Intern at local recording studio.
  • Essays: 1 super personal essay about some of my hardships in life, 1 about the mental health stigma in the USA
  • Other: Member of Honors Program at ACC

Some tips for y’all:

  • Essays and GPA are the biggest concern to them. You have to demonstrate that you know how to write. Obviously they are stubborn with certain pre-reqs but otherwise focus on the essays and getting the highest grade possible this semester.
  • Apply for housing/scholarships YESTERDAY!! It fills up SO fast and I watched so many of my peers go without housing because they waited too long.
  • For the more competitive schools and majors (Moody, McCombs, Cockrell, CNS, CS, Nursing) I rarely saw anyone get in with less than a 3.7. It’s DEFINITELY possible but that was the average GPA from the last transfer thread. Especially McCombs. I saw a 3.8 get in and was honestly shocked. I felt like I had one of the lowest GPAs compared to my peers who transferred into Moody. However, I saw some GPAs as low as 3.4 get into COLA. It just depends. Never give up though, even if your GPA is low!
  • It looks better to have 2 or less Ws on your transcript.
  • Texas applicants have a much better chance of getting in than out of state.
  • Resumes are optional, but important, IMO. Try to focus on your achievements in COLLEGE, not in highschool. Obviously if you are fresh out of highschool you may not have any other options, but this is what I was advised to do.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!! HOOK 'EM!

do you guys think with gpa 3.57 can accepted at cola economic or cola undeclared? thanks

@mintpopsicles a lot of good advice there, congrats on gaining admission.

One clarification - expanded resumes are required for transfer students, they are optional/recommended for first-time freshman. Your advice about focusing on college is definitely good though.

Your 3.71 GPA was likely right at average, maybe slightly above average, for the typical admit to Moody. Indeed, business and engineering you need to be at a 3.8 or higher.

@KevinRMartin

What’s the average GPA for COLA external transfers? I’m sure it varies by major, but your best guess would be very much appreciated! Any other tips for getting admitted into COLA?

@wickedwarrior777 average COLA admit is a 3.6; I think I’m going to end the semester with a 3.2; am I screwed? I have jumped huge since last year (2.6).

@KevinRMartin

do you guys think with gpa 3.57 can accepted at cola economic or cola undeclared? thanks

@economicmajor that is a really vague question to ask, even more so with no stats. I don’t give you that high of chance, but it depends on how well you did in your math classes and any other prerequisites classes. If you had made straight A’s in these, then your chances are much higher than what your gpa states, but if your gpa is just inflated from easy classes then your chances are much lower than on the surface. It also depends on EC’s you definitely don’t want to be the person who has a mediocre or even a high gpa without ECs. A lot of colleges, not just UT Austin, are looking for transfer candidates who are not only good at school but also at life. Accepting you makes the said college invested in your success, because you represent said college. Whether you like it or not, you have become an ambassador for your college, your success gives the school more success. Therefore build your application like you were to build a company pitch, sure add passion and problems you have faced to it, but use these as tools to only highlight why your are a great candidate and above anything else why you will be extremely successful in whatever you decide to pursue. Why did I go on this tangent? - It’s because with even with a low gpa, if you create a well built application showing success at all costs, then any admission officer is going to want to accept you because the school itself won’t want to miss out on a very successful person in the future upping the prestige of said school.
These are my thoughts… But hey what do I know? I am applying to UT also! Lol

Computer Science - Class of 2019 Hopeful

I just finished my last semester at San Antonio College, and I will go to UT in Spring. I applied in September, and I was admitted on November 4th. Below is my profile:

62 credit hours with a perfect GPA 4.0

3 essays about my education journey, hardships in my life, and my motivation:
*Truly, when I was in 6th grade I was forced to drop out of middle school beause my parents moved around my country too frequently. I never went beyond 6th grade. 10 years later, after my family came the US, I went to evening ESL classes to learn English. Afterward, I bought 2 GED preparation books from Amazon by which I educated myself, then I took and passed GED tests. After receiving my GED, I went to my local college. Frankly, 2 years before leaving my country, I bought some textbooks to study by myself, and I gained some basic high school knowledge.

10 recommendation letters from my professors and supervisors at the Adult Learning Center where I learned ESL and got my GED.
Resume

College of Natural Sciences
Double majors in Biophysics and Chemistry

My application for Spring 2017 just went into review yesterday-- so anxious right now!

Hey can anyone tell me how important LORs are. I am applying to COLA psychology BA for spring of 2017. I have already sent in my application and 3 essays. And my GPA would be about 3.4 at the end of this semester at ACC.

Two years ago, my son’s application was “in review” from Oct to late Feb (when he was admitted). Don’t read anything into “in review” except “your application is complete.”

I was wondering if you could chance me for acceptance as a transfer student in the Fall of 2016… I am applying to Psychology and am a little nervous because it seems like Psych has become popular.

I am currently a student at Texas State but have 32 hours from Austin Community College. I did not have the usual path to college as I was homeschooled and started taking classes at ACC early. My public school friends my age will be graduating from HS this year. I will have 57 hours after this summer but only 41 when I apply.

GPA: 3.93 (4.0 from this semester at Texas State and 3.91 from ACC)
Hours: 41 when apply and taking 13 in the Spring and 3 in Summer. I also have one AP class that will get me 3 hours credit. Do I submit that with my app?
LORs: 1 from volunteer work and one from ACC History professor.
Essays: I think they are pretty strong. One is about my educational path and how it applies to becoming a therapist and one is about bullying.

I am in the Honors program at Texas State but haven’t taken any honors classes there. I am currently in a 750 hour Aesthetics program and will be testing for my Esthetics license in the Spring. I am also a musician and released an album a year ago. These things and some of my other non-traditional educational opportunities are highlighted in my essay.

Any tips and advice is appreciated!
