Classes: I'm thinking I want to take Stats 60 and Math 51 my first year; does it matter which one I take first?

Scheduling: Does anyone know which Econ classes Econ majors typically take freshman year? Is it just Econ 1A and 1B? Can I take Econ 50 too? Or Econ 102A...?

Thanks in advance!

I don’t think so. Although for non-math types, a common piece of advice is to take math 51 in winter or spring quarter, “off-track.” I won’t advise that, because you know yourself best, just know that’s the common practice.

If the scheduling works, you can start to take upper level classes given that you fulfilled the prerequisites or gained permission from the instructor. If you took AP Econ in high school, you may be able to get out of 1A, though that may have changed.

As a parent of an incoming sophomore I would advise not to go into high level courses during your first quarter, unless its in subject area you are profoundly comfortable with. Take the normal progressions, until you are used to the very fast paced environment and the college experience. You’re a freshman you are going to need some time to acclimate. Treat yourself because of the first quarter you won’t have that courtesy every again.

Enjoy Stanford and Welcome to the Farm!!! Its truly the most magnificent school!!!

Also math 51 is considered the toughest math course. Make sure you really have all the prereqs before taking this class. (Math 40 series).

Mmhmm, I took Calc BC last year and scored a 5, so hopefully I’ll be okay? I also took AP Stats my sophomore year and scored a 5, and I heard from someone (not sure if it’s correct or not) that Stats 60 is kind of a review? Can anyone verify this information?

ALSO: I’m definitely interested in studying abroad. Does anyone know about the Berlin program? Is it recommended to do German 1 like autumn quarter of sophomore year and then German 2Z (the accelerated one where they combine the 2nd and 3rd quarters) while abroad?

I’ve heard that Stats60 is fairly similar to AP Stats and it’s also known to be a really easy 5 units. My friend took it one quarter and they only had weekly quizzes and midterms, no final. I also advise to take Math51 off track. I took it winter last year and it was decent.

For econ, most freshmen intent on majoring in econ usually do Econ1A fall, Econ1B winter, and Econ50 spring. They take Math51 before spring because it’s a prereq for Econ50.

I don’t know much about the Berlin program but I know that for some quarters there’s no German requirements while others there is a requirement. Try going to the Bing Overseas Studies website for more information.

Yeah you should be fine in 50 series, but being able to handle a class does not mean it will be easy.

I think Stats 60 isn’t calculus based, and I think math types who do take it view it as a GPA booster. Have you considered a calculus-based statistics class?

For Berlin, I know a few people who have done it though I haven’t talked extensively with them. What I do know is it is homestay based (which can be a hit or miss), pretty popular, and offers a fair share of classes that count for majors. I’ve been to Berlin myself- alternative city, lots of cheap food, art, history, and diversity, good nightlife, solid metro, and so forth. It is my favorite city in Europe (ich bin ein berliner!), and it’s good for study abroad because it is fairly centrally located in Europe (Paris is only option that’s better imo) and I think the language requirements are pretty lax (although this may depend on the quarter you go). One of my friends went fall quarter without German beforehand, took it over there. That said they’d probably recommend you to get your feet wet in German before going abroad, although you do not need to know German to get from the airport to your first German class.

Is there anyone who doesn’t get into a study abroad program or (for Berlin) the Krupp internship program?
