I live close to UCF, so hopefully there’s no letter waiting to be delivered to me
@lcgusa I think if your appeal specifically addressed that WF, the health circumstances, and your subsequent retake with a stellar grade…that would be your best effort for an appeal. I am hoping you are an example of a positive outcome for an appeal…because your story warrants a happy ending!
No matter what though…you are an amazing student and should have some great options for colleges where you will thrive!
@timbercreek16 I live in the northern part of FL, but then again I got my letter Tuesday so I don’t know why it wouldn’t have reached you down by UCF (central Florida?) by now. I guess be on the look out today, but it seems it would have reached you in the last 4 days. Good luck!
@4kids2graduate thank you! Yes, I retook the class and got an A, but the reason I went to summer school was because there wasn’t a spot available for me in the algebra 2 class during the school year. I can only imagine NM thinking, “what is wrong with her transcript? Why did she withdraw from a class and retake it during the summer?
Merit scholars never do this.” But there were some circumstances I had to work around—it was a context that was not present in the application to explain the crazy transcript.
No letter for me today thankfully. Best of luck to you on the appeal! @Icgusa
I would think you are safe (of course I don’t want to jinx it), @timbercreek16. Good luck and hope you make NMF!
i’ve been scouring past NMF threads and I found this post from two years ago from someone who was rejected from National Achievement:
For anyone’s future reference NMSC now has no appeals process for a rejection due to grades, what they call a “grade withdraw.” I asked about ap/honors coursework, upward trends, extenuating circumstances and overall GPA and the guy claimed it was holistically reviewed but coming down to a couple of grades is in no way holistic.

Can anyone confirm this elimination of the appeals process? Without it, it’s hopeless
I have been quietly reading with extreme intensity over the last few weeks. My daughter is a NMSF and we are anxiously waiting on her approval/denial letter. It has been pins and needles (like everyone else).
A breakdown. My daughter had a 2180 on her PSAT and a qualifying score of 2080 on her SAT. Her UW GPA is 3.71 and weighted 4.00. She has 3 semester C’s and no disciplinary issues. Two of the C’s were in AP courses, one was a pre-AP course. She fully earned 2 of the C’s the other should have never been on her transcript. Regardless we have been anxiously checking the mail each and every day.
Like everyone else it seems, we have spotty mail service as well so no sighs of relief just yet. When we started this whole process a college adviser was like, “oh yeah she’ll make NMF no problems” blah blah blah. Only after doing my research and reading a lot am I finding out that it wasn’t the slam dunk the adviser was feeding us.
holding hands with all others in waiting
Icgusa, my son received a rejection letter because of low SAT score on Jan 16th. I can pretty much confirm that they do not have a “formal” appeal process. My son stats are 4.0 UW, 2240 SAT(1 try), 36 ACT(1 try), 6 AP out of 7 offered, dual enrolled in HS/college and no problems on his record. At this time I really cannot get into any more detail on a still fluid situation.
@Skigropple Did you happen to call NM and inquire about an appeals process? I was thinking it was pretty informal—they don’t exactly advertise it on their website; only from gleaning old threads on CC has there been indication of one.
Also, did your son send in his 2240 SAT score? The minimum SAT score was 1960, and your son’s grades would not have prevented from moving on to NMF.
I talked with NMSC mult. times last week and they have been helpful. My first inquire was about the appeal process and I was told they did not have a formal process. I do not want to say more about his situation (which is still in process) but I do know he is qualified to move onto NMF based on his scores.
@Skigropple Regardless, I hope your appeal is successful and he is able to move on to NMF.
I need to call NMSC and inquire about their appeals process–does my GC and/or principal just write a letter outlining the circumstances of my bad grade? I’m starting to think it wasn’t the C from freshman year that did me in, but that “WF” from sophomore year and my having to take a summer class to make it up (ended up with an A) and get the credit so I could stay on track and take precalculus junior year. It’s a long story, and I was transferring schools and going to take the class at my new school when I withdrew from the class…it’s just that that background wasn’t included in the NM application.
Just found this thread and caching up. Sorry to all who have received letters about not progressing. Does anyone know the next stage in the process? I think letters go out that you are a finalist but then what?
@greeny8 For those who make finalists, letters are mailed to principals Feb. 3, and then letters are also sent to finalists’ home addresses Feb. 10.
@Skigropple Wow- That is crazy - 2240 “low SAT”? There must be something else they took issue with. Hoping for a happy result for you and for @lcgusa.
@Skigropple 2240 is significantly higher than 1960 that is typically been considered the number necessary to beat. Guessing it’s a mistake on the letter…hoping that works out for you as low score ans 2240 doesn’t make any sense.
Thanks @lcgusa i wonder how long until you find out if you’re a scholar. I’ll have to look up old threads
Anyone have opportunity for a Full Ride if you become a Finalist? We are waiting to hear on my son and very nervous. 3 students at his school are SF.
Waiting on NMF for bama (close to full ride), northeastern, and USC. Good luck everyone!
D will be going to OU, not a full ride but full tuition + and they stack out side scholarships and it’s 5 years so a very good deal. There shouldn’t be a issue with her making NMF but I will sleep better once we hear the official word.
