2016 Windows on Wiliams (WOW) Discussion

Accepted! (From Pennsylvania)

@long2181998 wow if you are average for Williams I might as well not even apply even with the fee waiver

Made an account just for this thread.

Accepted to WOW

ACT: 36 S, 36 E, 36 R, 33 M (5 on AP Calc AB seems to help 33 M)

7 IB classes, 4 APs (throughout all my hs career)

4.0 unweighted GPA

4.9 weighted GPA

Personally, I think my essay was well developed.

Lots of ECs, lots of regional/state awards, two national awards (Can’t remember if the WOW app asked for these?)

Just to ask should I even apply to the school if I got the fee waivered and the 30 min appointment? I feel somewhat discouraged to apply because it seems like applying against the people that got in would deter my chances of acceptance.

@aeskimo if you really want to go to williams, of course apply. the williams app didnt ask for a teacher recommendation or ask much about extracurriculars; the common app will let you more thoroughly present yourself as an applicant. being rejected from wow shouldn’t deter you at all. a good amount of wow attendees dont even apply because they dont like williams after the visit or are admitted somewhere else ED.

I Was Accepted before the priority deadline, but I’ll post some stats here to help future applicants:

ACT: 30 English: 34 Math: 27 Reading: 34 Science: 26
GPA: 3.6-3.8 range unweighted - with a dip in my GPA sophomore year due to unusual circumstances, which I explained in detail.
School Type: Public School not on the East Coast, I don’t believe anyone at my school has gone to Williams before…don’t quote me on that though.
Course load: 1 AP Class Sophomore year, 2 Junior, 8 Senior Year for a total of 11 AP Classes. *Upward Trend
Income: Upper Middle Class - [90,000-130,000]
Race/Ethnicity: Ethnically Hispanic (Puerto Rican), and therefore Tri-Racial
Other: LGTB Minority
Short Answer Response: Strong - Had 2 acquaintances/friends that attend Harvard and Cornell, both said my short answer response was intriguing and that I had a strong chance. I recommend having someone read your essays that doesn’t know you too well.

To minorities with higher incomes and strong stats, do not be afraid to apply!!! We are grossly underrepresented in higher education and because of that, get huge bumps in the college process and top universities.

If you’re not a minority and have a high income, then the chances of getting accepted into this program are pretty slim.

Oh I forgot to add that I know how to speak English and Spanish fluently (in regards to the question that asks about what languages are spoken at home).

what dates is everyone leaning towards? im doing the september one :stuck_out_tongue:

@Dartmouth_21 Same, skip school while the classes are still easy.

I was not accepted, but I got a fee waiver and an offer of a phone appointment.

GPA: 4.75 W
Class rank: top 10%
ACT 34/ SAT 1570
Asian, upper middle class

@Dartmouth_21 I’m leaning towards the Sept date too but I’m waiting for a response from Amherst. If accepted into Amherst’s fly-in, the hart part is going to be choosing which one to go to.

@drakefan "We understand that some students may be coordinating this trip with a visit to another institution. If you have been accepted to a similar program at another college and the dates for that program conflict with WOW, please email Pam Shea immediately after you submit your registration form so that we can work with that institution to coordinate your travel. Please be sure to include the other school’s name and program dates in your email to Pam. "

@long2181998 thank you! The dates overlap too much for me to go to both so when Amherst’s decision comes out, I’ll just pick one if needed.

@DoctorMD I have a 36 ACT, some college classes in my transcript, I don’t have a class rank but I have a 3.9 UW GPA, I have 6 APs and 1 more this year (with scores of four 5s and two 4s)

I was surprised that I got in because I’m not a URM or first gen student, but I do come from a low-income, very large family.

@drakefan a lot of people do both in the same weekend! You could also ask amherst if you could do the october date  i visited amherst last month and i didnt like it at all, so if i get accepted into divoh i don’t think ill go

@Dartmouth_21, I don’t think anyone would suggest that it is a completely random process, but it is difficult to tell from the data self-reported here how much weight is attached to various attributes. Of course, URM, 1st gen, low income are priorities, but after that it is hard to tell what attributes carry more weight. How does a 2.7 GPA with no EC’s, no volunteer activities, but a high ACT get in? Perhaps super low income and an outstanding essay, but a 2.7 would have a difficult time at Williams. How does a student with family income of $100,000 get a fee waiver and an interview?

I don’t want to take anything away from the students who got it in. Congratulations are definitely in order. It will be interesting to see if there are any similarities and/or differences with the Amherst pool.

@azcpamom i agree, the process seems to be hollistic but its hard to tell what they valued after low income/minority. i think the fee waiver is based more on if they see you as a viable candidate for the admissions round. so, based on merit rather than income.

@ikxyls I’ll probably do the September date since October is closer to the Nov. ED deadline in addition to the unofficial start of debate/mock trial season. I can’t wait to see all of you guys there!

@Dartmouth_21 Thanks a bunch! I’m attending the fly-in at Wellesley so the October date is a no-go but I’ll look in to attending both on the same weekend

Anyone know if putting this on College Application will help?
