2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

Hi guys! Like everyone here, I can not think about anything else but the admission decision. It’s killing me.
If it is not hard for you, could you please read my stats and tell me what you think. Marshall appliciant. GPA - 3.9. I am a Math tutor in my community college, and SI Leader for Calc II. I have two kids under 5. Immigrant. Low income family. First generation college student. The reason I am scared is that I have 6 W’s, but I have a medical excuse for them that has been explained in the essay. I applied last year and got rejected because during the year before applying I was not a full time student, and one of the major courses was missing. So this time I tried my best to be a full time, and getting good grades. All the major courses and the prerequisites are done. Please tell me what you think. Thanks in advance.

@SportsNerd24 that’s awesome! Good luck!

@masechka1988 You’re definitely a competitive applicant, hard to say what your chance is though because so many applicants have similar stats. Good luck!

Well, only 50 days until June 1st…The anxiety is real right now ugh

And it’s nearly 100 days until the middle of July, which is how long I and the rest of the sophomore applicants could be waiting lol

@penntousc lol was gonna comment that, but yea as a sophomore and getting SGR and all we’re most likely not hearing back until.mid July. Since that’s so far away iv just stopped thinking/stressing about the decision. Out of our control now and worst case scenario I guess there’s always next year.

@Skepta a lot of sophomores heard back in June last year as well, I’d say it was a pretty even split… I think it really depends on how many non-SGR transfers enroll, how many freshman enroll, and how many applicants there are for that specific school

Have a lot of people received SGR so far?

Well if I get a SGR I’m definitely not hearing back before mid July since my spring quarter ends June 29th. But I did see sophomores from last year’s thread hearing back much earlier.

@arteest1 only a few that we all know of

If I am a Junior applying for Viterbi, approximately when will I hear back? Haha I have to plan my future

@Skepta yeah that makes a huge difference, my semester is over May 9th

@stahboy I can almost guarantee it won’t be until May but idk for sure, there weren’t too many Viterbi applicants on the thread from last year

@stahboy May 20th to July. I’ve been looking at threads from 2014 up.

I’m really curious as to what the admissions process actually consists of, because everything that I’ve ever seen/heard/read supports the idea that regional counselors are responsible for the applications in their designated regions, yet at USC, it seems as though the timing of the decision is dependent upon the individual school/major. The only two scenarios I can think of would be:

  1. The regional counselor reviews the application, and either rejects it or passes it onto the department of that student's major, and it is then the department that makes the final decision, which would explain why school decisions are all released at the same time.

OR

  1. The regional counselor reviews and makes the final decision on their regional applications, but the decisions are withheld from being released until all of the decisions for a certain school have been made.

Just thinking out loud, what do you guys think?

GAAARRRAGHHHHHHH

@penntousc i think it may be a mix of the two depending on the student… especially since they really can’t accept everyone they like as applicants until the new incoming freshman class fully commits since they have until May 1 (space availability)
Also some people applying Annenberg applicants will sometimes get in as undecided before hearing back from their applied major. Also Viterbi is also one of the schools that tend to hear later.
I think it could also have to do with how impacted the major you’re applying to is, and a lot of majors within schools like Annenberg and Viterbi are impacted, more so than Dornsife which just has a bigger number of major options which is why it makes sense that their majors are less impacted. There are more ‘substitutes’ for similar majors within Dornsife while thats not the case for Viterbi.
But all I know for sure, is that its a painfully long process for those of us waiting to hear back (ha…ha…ha…)

@penntousc I think its based on school. Why I say this is because Viterbi once said that for those who choose 2nd choice Viterbi the applications will never come to them and they pretty much said if Viterbi is your second choice you’re pretty much rejected to Viterbi. I don’t know the role of the regional counselors to much. It’s an interesting thought you bring up.

lol I wouldn’t mind being one of those undeclared acceptances that pops up out of the blue, I’ve only taken math, writing and GEs anyways since no business/accounting/econ courses from my CC transfer to USC, and I’d rather take those courses there anyways

Is the portal down for anyone else? I think that they may be uploading some decisions
