2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

@penntousc Speaking of the entertainment industry, they seemed to be filming some sort of movie/TV thing on-campus today! The sign was crazy and said “Prop guns will be used for filming today. Don’t be alarmed” It made me want to ask all the security people what was going on, but I figured I wouldn’t get much information out of them :stuck_out_tongue:

Just to add to what has already been said, USC can make you wait quite a long time - they’re so notorious for it. When I applied as “technically” a sophomore still with about 62 units completed by spring, I received an SGR and didnt’ find out until July 15th or so that I was not accepted. When I was a “super” junior and had 100 units the next year, I did not hear until June 6th and I think I was basically one of the only people to hear past their so-called deadline to notify everybody of some form of decision, but nobody likes to believe it happened for some reason, lol. I did just submit my SIR to UCLA as I couldn’t gamble on USC. I know it sucks and you may or may not lose some money, but sometimes it would be a safe move to SIR somewhere instead of winding up with nowhere to go.

does anyone have stats on the average gpa for a transferring sociology major??

@Pantafootball Yeah, they were from previous year.
I mean, I am saying I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to reject me. I then would have a legitimate reason to stay at CC for another year
And I can use another year!

@zettasyntax do you have any reasons on why they took so long for your junior application ? And also were other junior applicants notified earlier or at least the majority ? Being told around March would sound perfect haha

@Pantafootball I obviously don’t have any experience with that ^ (as this is my first year applying), however my theory is that since the LA county applicant pool is so large, it takes a lot longer for them to review those applications because obviously they cannot accept everyone. It seemed as though the very large majority of applicants that received decisions after June 1st were California residents and/or sophomore applicants, and I could be wrong, but that seemed to be the reason for so many late acceptances/rejections/spring acceptances (there were A LOT of those too). I also noticed that applicants from other 4 year colleges, especially in CA, seemed to have to wait fairly long too.

@Pantafootball Actually, when I was a technically still a “sophomore” the first year I applied and received a request for spring grades, I heard around April 20ish if I recall. It mainly took so long because my semester didn’t end until June. However, even then it still took like 3-4 weeks for them to review my SGR and ultimately reject me =\ The majority of people do seem to be notified in middle/late May from what I can recall. USC does get a lot of applicants from California. A stat from a few years back said that accepted 33% of their transfer class was compromised of California CC students (or something along those lines). I 100% agree with @penntousc regarding CA 4 year colleges. They seem to have amongst the lowest priority for some reason and it’s a bit sad. I would think most of them are quite prepared already being in a university setting. As for why it took them so long to get to me, I still believe that they simply forgot about me :stuck_out_tongue: My reason is simply this: once I called to complain about not having a decision yet, one was made 2 days after my call. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it :stuck_out_tongue:

@cassielk I don’t believe USC makes that information available like USC does. They simply state a “3.7 average GPA”. I even checked the Viterbi page to see if they had a higher average GPA, but they also said “3.7”. They don’t seem to like letting people know what the average admitted GPA by major is.

@zettasyntax after looking at most of the people that were left over in June and July, I was also considering the possibility that maybe once applicants were officially SGR’ed, they got put back to the bottom of the pile again and even though they may get their spring grades in a week or two after that, maybe their file isn’t brought back out for review until late may/June. Would you agree that this is possibly the case?

@penntousc In a way, yes. Wayyy back in the 2014 thread, it was the norm that people seemed to wait a month minimum to hear back after an SGR. I know students that received spring grades way before I did and they still had to wait. Of course, there were people this past cycle that said they heard within a week or two, so there’s just too many instances that go against patterns I noticed. I’m still basing it somewhat as dependent on the counselor though. In the cycle I was accepted, I didn’t even hear from my counselor until May 7th that I was missing an important document, so I’m a firm believer in some sort of pile/stack system going on behind the scenes.

@zettasyntax I guess it’s fortunate then that my counselor has answered every one of my emails within two days, and also doesn’t review any territories in California (she reviews Louisiana, PA, and 2 counties in NJ), and since she doesn’t review any CA territories she shouldn’t be as busy, at least I hope

So glad for this thread…

Anyways! First question, how much emphasis is really put on extracurriculars? I definitely know that it never hurts, but how much does it actually influence your admissions (especially as a transfer)?

Secondly, can someone please explain SGR? I’ve been combing through USC threads, but I have yet to see a solid answer. Are there people that get accepted to USC without SGR? What does SGR signal?

Thanks in advance and hope to fight on with you guys next year (:

@penntousc seems like you were pretty involved with the past threads as well as @zettasyntax. I’ve browsed through the past threads but there is an immense amount of posts on them that it’s too much for me. Would you guys say the the Marshall applicants that were accepted were hovering around the 3.7 average or mostly sup star students getting 3.9, 4.0 gpa’s?

@zettasyntax and to add to the statistic of the CC transfer students making up 33% percent of the accepted offers. The new statistic for fall of 2015 application pool states that 58% of the accepted transfers were California CC students.

Can someone help me right quick? Ok so I plan on transferring for the Spring 2017 semester meaning I have to apply very soon. What I wanted to know is if my grades from this Fall semester will be on my transcript in time for decisions since I am retaking a class. Thanks a bunch guys and good luck

@DivinityAku Did you already get accepted for Spring 2017? Because I was told that you cannot apply for the Spring semester.

Sorry this is just a general question not specifically for this school. I plan to transfer to Florida State, sorry

@Pantafootball honestly it’s hard to give a straight answer to that question because I saw quite a few Marshall applicants with 3.8’s and 4.0’s, but I also saw a pretty good amount of applicants with under a 3.7 that still managed to get in. I’d say if you’re a 3.4-4.0, you have a shot to get in, but obviously more so if you are between a 3.7-4.0.

Hey guys!

So I’m planning on applying this fall as a junior transfer. I have 2 questions, they may sound dumb, but I was wondering what will USC be looking at, as in GPA? Will they only be looking at your transfer grades? Or will the non-transferable classes be included in the GPA they look at?

Second question is, will the time you submit your application affect your chances of getting in? Im currently taking 18 units and it could really bump up my GPA. I rather wait until this semester is over to submit my application but I’m not sure if I’ll have a disadvantage if I wait.

@BRIBRIL I believe it’s only your transferable GPA, and the majority of applicants wait until the first semester is over anyways, I think USC prefers that because it gives them recent coursework to consider

@awalksonman what is your advice for people applying with a really low gpa?

How do you guys plan on retrieving your high-school transcript? Mine can’t be ordered from the school district because it’s still at school. Any thoughts or tips?
