2017 and 2018 Invitation to Excellence

Same here! Congrats all!!

Me too! Does anyone elseā€™s email state which program they were selected into, or is it first-come first-served? I put down two choices

mine just said invitation to excellence? Iā€™m not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the additional opportunities? @nrs1600

@postAlone there were different academic breakout sessions to choose from hosted by the different schools to participate in depending on the intended major. I selected two different choices because they said if slots fill up, we might be placed into the other one, but it didnā€™t state in my I2E email which session I would be placed in. I guess it will be in the itinerary they send us later on

I think @nrs1600 is talking about choices you make when you accept the invitation, not the invitation itself.

Wowā€¦ I must admit that I am shocked right now that my son wasnā€™t invited with a 35 ACT, research at UC Berkeley and UCSD, competing in two national competitions, 4.55 GPA out of 4.0 scale, and attends an early college high school. I have reached out to the school hoping this was an oversight. However, my concern is that my son did not say Baylor was his top choice when called. He stated he was also considering Rice and Trinity as his other top choices.

Maybe there was a mistake with his applicationā€¦if he sent it in by November 1st, and sent in all the required material, for the invitation to excellence application, he probably should have been invited. @DisneyMom99 you could try calling?

@DisneyMom99, Iā€™d be surprised if saying that Baylor was not a top choice disqualified your S, who seems to be an excellent candidate. If anything, I2E would be an opportunity to win him over.

So if I got accepted in I2E, does that also me automatic acceptance into Baylor?

I donā€™t think so. The invitations to the November event were sent out in September, before EA closed.

Hi all,

I am an I2E alum who received the faculty scholarship and has volunteered at the reception for the past couple of years, so if you have any questions at all, Iā€™d be glad to help. I2E is a wonderful experience that I highly recommend.

Icy fish, just curious --What was the topic of the essay you had to write? (To win the scholarship)

@IcyFish how many were given??? do you know???

@icyfish My D is attending the January session. What factors are they looking for when determining who will receive the scholarship(s)? Thanks for you willingness to field questions about I2E!

@debbieinaustin I donā€™t remember the prompt, but I just reviewed my essay, so I think I can give a few pointers. I believe the task was to identify what I learned in my breakout session and how a Baylor education would help me with my future plans. I took very detailed notes throughout the whole process and made sure to quote some of the speakers and use their presentations to support my thesis. (And it never hurts to quote Baylorā€™s mission statement.)

@postAlone I can only speak exact numbers for the engineering and computer science school, but I was one of two recipients from my session to get the scholarship. I believe the numbers range from 1-4 per school per session.

@seniormom1823 I believe the ideal candidate is one who is distinct from his or her peers in some way. For example, I am a female engineering major who is known for her communication skills. This is fairly rare among my fellow engineering students who struggled through the more abstract classes weā€™ve had to take so far. It has been my experience that I2E is looking for students who will stand out from their peers in some way (as opposed to simply exemplify the perfect student). However, the other recipients I know are maybe not as communication-oriented as I am. I do know that all of us had big plans for our futures, and Iā€™m assuming we all wrote about them.
My best advice for your daughter is not to let herself become one of the applicants who blends into the background. Be remembered. Have her wear the same outfit for the headshot you send in as she wore for the weekend so they can more easily recognize her. I tried to be as engaging as possible and spoke to the dean every time I could. My dad likes to joke that my shared interest with the dean in a certain podcast is what got me the scholarship. Maybe heā€™s right. But finding some way to distinguish herself from the other applicants in a non-obnoxious fashion should be the first step for your daughter. Attend the networking reception if at all possible. At the end of the day, if a candidate even makes it to the session, EDIT(Posted before I was finished) he or she has already passed the grades/SAT/ACT/extracurricular cut. It comes down to the relationships he or she made during the weekend. I hope that helps!

@IcyFish, thanks for the insights. We were planning to skip the Friday reception (flying in from OOS) but have changed our flights so we can attend.

Iā€™m glad you are going! You meet lots of older students and faculty members, so even if you donā€™t get the scholarship, itā€™s a good place to ask questions.

Did anyone else apply for Gettermans Scholarship and if so, have you heard anything yet?

Thanks for suggesting I call Baylor about the Invitation to Excellence. Yes, there were two students with my sonā€™s name, so I presume it was a mix up. He is now invited to the Invitation to Excellence.

Yes, he received an $88,000 merit scholarship as well.
