2017 YES-W

Has anyone been contacted about YES-W yet?

I seem to recall that occurs in early Feb

Why do you ask? Is it going to make you feel better to know if other people have gotten called? This is the kind of thread that is only good for Killy sel-esteem and engendering anxiety. If you get called, great. if you don’t, that’s fine because plenty of people get in without a YES-W likely.

Actually, no, that’s not why I asked.

I inquired because in trying to plan my weekends in February (which involve a heavily scheduled FRC robotics season and the possibility of attending the Olin Candidates Weekend), I wanted to rule out this variable, if possible.

I find it odd that given you are concerned about “Killy self-esteem” you would bother to read this thread at all. Sounds like you need to steer clear for your own well-being.

I am also interested in whether anyone has received such calls.

@SinsOfAdmission Actually I’m a senior at Yale, so don’t worry about me. I was a YES-Wer way back in my day and found that people were simply way too concerned with who was getting calls when. No point in trying to plan your weekends in February considering you have no idea when it’s actually happening, or if it’s happening at all this year.

A general question about likely letters: what if you don’t pick up the phone? (aka I’m probably not going to get any but in the event that I do, I rarely pick up my phone)

They would probably call your counselor to let you know.

@scarletwitchx - If you have caller ID, and the call comes in from 203 area code, answer it.

YES-W weekend has been pushed back to the weekend before Bulldog days. Whether that has also impacted the notification timetable is unclear.

^That seems vaguely risky to me, especially since those invited to YES-W will likely have admissions offers from other colleges they’ll want to visit at that time.

@scarletwitchx If you don’t pick up the phone, they leave a message and ask you to call them back. They don’t call your counselor and won’t tell anyone other than you. Re: timeline, if you think it’s a problem, call up admissions and let them know :P. I’m sure the smart people working in admissions looked at the calendars of admissions offices at many other universities and decided this would be best. But again, if you think it’s a problem and you’d rather visit for an entire weekend in February, call them up and make your opinion known \sarcasm

(ahh, I know, and I know I’m probably not going to get YES-W anyways–I was just wondering because I’ve always wondered how people attended so many visit weekends oops) (and then I realized half of them are during the school day)

@tdy123, How do you know YES-W has been moved to April?

So weird. I wonder why they think this will be more effective. And doesn’t moving it right before Bulldog Days mean that it’s unlikely they would then attend Bulldog Days?

@SinsOfAdmission Surveys by the admissions office have indicated that in the past, the YES-W kids tended to make their decisions based on YES-W weekend, and not go back for Bulldog Days. With the two scheduled back-to-back, and the admissions department picking up the travel tab for the YES-W kids, the department is hoping that they’ll stay for Bulldog days to get the full experience. With my son having been invited to YES-W, (and attending both YES-W and Bulldog Days) I can say that the experience at YES-W and Bulldog days is considerably different, with YES-W being focused on STEM, and Bulldog Days providing a much wider view of the Yale experience. Remember, the kids invited to YES-W are the kids that the Admit department are sure will also be accepted to schools like Harvard, MIT and Stanford. For many of the YES-W kids, one of the highlights of attending is that the event becomes something of an RSI, Intel and Siemens reunion weekend. My son, and the other YES-W kids who chose Yale who my son had spoken to, ended up choosing Yale because the opportunities to explore areas outside of STEM seemed much better at Yale, and with YES-W focused on STEM, also attending Bulldog days gives you additional insight into all the additional opportunities at Yale.

So…no likely letters this year…

@tdy123 Thank you for the detailed explanation. Does Yale really think that students on the West Coast would fly across the country two weekends in a row? Or does YES-W precede Bulldog Days just a day or so before?

Bulldog Days are usually Monday-Wednesday so it sounds like you could come in for the YES-W weekend and then stay for a few more days.
