2018 - 2019 USC Transfer

@lanterngirl got it! Thank you. How about the GEs? I know USC doesn’t require students to complete them but do you think it really maters? I’m thinking that it will somehow give students an edge if they completed all by Fall (?) I only finished 2/6 last semester so I’m worried lol. But I did 1 in winter intersession, so now I’m finishing the remaining 3 GEs this Spring.

@CADREAMIN Sorry for my poorly worded post. That said, I believe you got the gist. Anyway, I am going to submit an additional document as you recommended. Should I write this document in letter format? Meaning, “To Whom It May Concern…etc etc.”

@mcspns511

Well, you’re supposed to take at least two GE courses at USC anyways, so missing two classes is expected. I can’t say much for whether missing one or two courses really matters or not because I don’t work in the Marshall Admissions office, but if you’re missing a class or two more than others I can’t imagine it being a huge factor against you if they really like you.

To address anyone else on this thread who might as a similar question: Missing or having an extra GE credit, having one B, making a typo on an essay, etc. doesn’t make or break applications. They look at the entire person. I can’t tell anyone what Admissions is thinking. If they don’t like you altogether, they’re not going to change their minds just because you’ve taken every single GE before entering. If they like you, they’ll overlook things that are “recommended” if they think you can make up for it while you’re at school at USC (this I learned from internship applications this semester).

Hey guys, I just wanted to say something about some of the Qs I’ve gotten on this thread:

Firstly, I LOVE helping you guys out. Answers about what I’ve experienced (like the social environment, taking classes, professors, and acceptance letters) are things that I don’t mind answering because there’s no resource from the school that you could use to find answers.

However, a lot of what people have been asking has to do with things that can be found on the USC Transfer Brochure. Before asking questions about requirements, please refer to the PDF that the school provides. A lot of the answers I’ve been giving are ones that I’ve come up with after looking up the Brochure and reading it.

Because I know you guys are smart and capable enough to attend SC, I’ll let you guys do the research on requirements your own. Anything about classes you’ll need to take once attending USC Marshall (like Micro/Macroecon and Accounting) are ones that I’ll still be glad to answer. For the rest, I’ll direct you below.

https://admission.usc.edu/docs/TransferringToUSC.pdf

For example: “All upper-division business core courses and major electives must be taken at USC. Business courses
completed at another college or university may earn general elective credit.”

If you see this and don’t know if your economics class falls into this category, google “USC business core courses” and you’ll find a list of the core courses to compare it against.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone know if there is a specific date that TTP kids will receive their admission decision? I’ve heard late March but was wondering if there was a specific date.

TTP finds out at the beginning of the transfer notification process (they are the first to get results of that group) usually just a few days/week after regular decisions are released, which tends to be around March 23rd.

So when typically do the first of the regular transfer group begin to hear?

A wave usually hits April 1st and 2nd, then they continue to roll out in chunks through May. What is scary is there are several that come after June 1st and if you look at old threads, there are quite a few “accepted posts” as late as July. But the bulk should be between April 1 and June 1.

I sent in my Winter Quarter grades last week, still 4.0 GPA. I had been anticipating until not hearing until June.

Maybe, they won’t need the Spring Quarter.

I’m applying for Marshall. If I get in can I defer for a year? And if I can defer for a year can I re-apply to another program at USC during that time? Marshall is a strong runner up to a program I have much more passion for but was sadly rejected from and I want to give it another shot at applying before I fold.

Hey everyone, I applied to Thornton. Its pretty hard to find threads that talk about transferring to Thornton, so i’ve been wondering… Do I have a better chance of getting in because of the school Im applying to? Also, I did ok my freshman year, but have been getting all A’s sophomore year (I’m a junior applicant). How much does USC care about upward trend in GPA?

@markspencer22 Did you have to audition or send in any recordings/works? In my opinion, I would think that the performance majors like Thornton/Kaufman would be more difficult than just about any other school to get into because it is more subjective. You can have awesome grades, but if they don’t like your portfolio/work…it just seems harder. I agree that there isn’t too much insight when it comes to Thornton transfers. I can only recall a handful of people that mentioned getting into Thornton. I think somebody last year mentioned getting accepted for a composition program.

USC does seem to like an upward grade trend/consistency! If you had a rocky first semester they would be thrilled to then see three semesters of nearly perfect grades; it shows the first semester was just a fluke.

@zettasyntax I actually applied for the Music Industry major, which doesn’t require an audition since it isn’t a performance major. I did include 3 self-produced professional recordings of my rock band’s music (I wrote all lyrics, sang lead vocals, and played guitar and bass). Even though they’re great all-around songs, I’m concerned they may not care about them since they aren’t classical songs.

Wanted to know if someone could gauge my chances of getting in.

I am a first year at UCI and I am in the Honors Program. I got a 3.75 in fall quarter and am likely to get the same GPA for Winter quarter. Both quarters I have taken 16 units, including an 8 unit Honors Writing Course. I have completed 6 of my 8 GE categories and have a total of 2 GE courses left to complete, one of which will be Spring quarter.
In high school, I had a 4.3 GPA, 11 APs, and a 31 ACT.
Thank you!

I applied to Dornsife as either Econ or political science major. I am currently Political Science at my current school.

Been avoiding thinking about USC this past month but saw USC’s Instagram today that freshmen will hear next week, and it just put all the nerves back in me. Looking through last year’s thread and people starting hearing at the end of April, which means we are a month away! Ahhh!!!

@CADREAMIN - I saw your earlier post about TTP’ers usually finding out first. Do you know if they receive a formal mailing or if it is only online? My D is abroad in Europe through TTP and anxiously awaiting results. 3.75, 5 GE’s completed last semester plus the English requirement and 2 more GE’s currently. Any insight would be appreciated!

@ballard1234 Many TTPs get the same beautiful package the same day as regular admits! Not all of them, because some do get SGRs (but not many), so you may be seeing great news soon with everyone else. May want to keep this info from her for now (just incase hers comes later) but also so you can plan some cool way to “What’s App” or “Skype” her or whatever with the surprise package in hand.

Congrats on having such a mature daughter that could start her first year abroad and do so well!

@CADREAMIN Thank you very much for the prompt reply, I was hoping the TTP kids would also receive packages. Fingers crossed that we hear sooner than later- Definitely planning a reveal if things go well. The freshman year abroad in Europe is definitely not for everyone as it is very challenging, but I can state with certainty that D is stronger for it, and as the years pass will be very grateful for the experience. Thanks again and good luck to all transfers!

I remember the day that my bro’s package came in January of 2012. My parents started bawling. Especially mom!
