2018 - 2019 USC Transfer

@bantisz what’s up  what concentration did you apply for? Good luck!

@ashurikko there was no required letter of rec

@angeleno13 Is the math a pre-req for your major or do you need to complete the minimum transferable math course? Either way, both scenarios are grounds for USC to ask for spring grades - that’s how I got my SGR the first time I applied. I was in the process of completing my transferable math course. I had a 4.0 when I applied, so the GPA factor doesn’t really come into play. I did get a B in the math course though and was ultimately rejected. I think it depends a lot on your counselor. The one that I had that year was apparently infamous for rejecting students. A great applicant from last year was in the exact same situation, had the same counselor as me, and she got rejected.

@zettasyntax can you message me your counselor? just curious

Anyone wonder what standards they would expect for the portfolio of a sophomore transfer into Interactive Media?

Also, if I were to transfer from a college that USC does not have a matriculation agreement with (GMU), how would the process work?

@zettasyntax What year was that? Why so?

So are the decisions greatly influenced by our counselors whatever school we applied to? @zettasyntax

@Anco17 The overall application doesn’t require one, but depending on the major you applied for, some do require them. Like Annenberg Comm needs one and I think SCA requires like 3 of them.

What kinds of requirements for GE transfer can I clear out with a test at the college you would transfer out of?

Also, for the Arts requirement, can it be an art class, not just an art history class?

@StipendAwarded USC has an online transfer guide that is super thorough and tells a student everything they need to do to optimize their chances of a successful transfer. You should go over all of that and get familiar with their GE requirements and compare them to the school you will be attending.

@CADREAMIN I have Transferring to USC as an iBook. I am just wondering if any art courses I have to take in GMU relating to game design could count.

Also, since I have AP Calculus AB for my senior year, would that mean I cleared the minimum math requirement?

I did look online, and though GMU’s equivalent to USC 130 is a 300 course that is not takeable by freshmen, I did get a 4 on AP English Language and Composition. What should I do?

@zettasyntax which school did you transfer from? I’m hoping we don’t have the same counselor because we’re pretty damn similar on paper :stuck_out_tongue:

@TrojanBear My counselor was Rakin Hall. He’s moved onto Ohio State University, so hopefully that means people from my community college have more of a chance now, lol

@StipendAwarded This was in 2014. I decided to try again the next year though, got a new counselor, and was accepted.

@luckybear Hmm, I’d imagine for performance/talent-based schools/majors with portfolio requirements, the counselors have less input. Other than that though, I seriously believe your admission counselor has a vital role. I basically had the same exact stats both times that I applied.

@durtysouth I transferred from East Los Angeles College. The counselor that rejected me is long gone. I saw him at commencement though, so that was weird :stuck_out_tongue:

My counselor seems nice from her picture lol.

@ashurikko Ah sorry, gotcha. Good luck btw if you did apply for transfer

@CADREAMIN Viterbi has an excellent video on their site about what they look for in transfers. That video makes me feel confident about my chances

Link? @Anco17

@csumit http://viterbiadmission.usc.edu/transfer/ scroll down to “How to be a competitive transfer”. Are you applying to Viterbi?

Would it be okay to email the Associate Director of Admissions of Marshall with a question I have? I have a question regarding class articulation lol. (Plus, wouldn’t it benefit myself for her to see my name?) lol

@Anco17 Great video. Thanks for sharing. Not applying to Viterbi, but good info anyway.

Thing I took away is applying after one year vs two makes a difference in regards to coursework taken or in progress in how USC rates you as a candidate.

@aznboi4981 Not if the question can be answered online. In that case, seeing your name would not be a positive. And isn’t it a little late at this point? Unless you just won the Intel Science fair or something amazing, reaching out of the blue may just be seen as just chatter. You guys are either in or not, desperate attempts will be seen as such. While a relationship with your advisor is great to have, make sure your communication adds value to your application versus detracting from it.

There is so much info on the USC wesbite re transferring, I would certainly rely on that as a first source of information. After you have exhausted that, then ask your advisor. When asking too many questions you risk being seen as a bit helpless or someone that can’t research basic information - neither trait being a positive for colleges.
