Hello everyone,
Due to a serious medical emergency I find myself needing to take this 2nd semester off. What I’d like to do is go to college next year and pick up where I left off and then take another semester off later and graduate with the class of 2020. I think that I could do a really meaningful experience during the time off and I don’t think graduating a year after my peers is that big a deal. I mean, a lot of kids take a gap year!
Basically, what I’m asking is: should I make what I want to do clear on my transfer apps, or would this be looked on negatively? Is there some major factor I should be considering when deciding between 2020 and 2019?
This should not be a big problem. There are a lot of reasons that students have for taking a semester or year off. I take it you are currently at a community college intending to transfer to a 4-year after 3 semesters of classes? That would make good sense but you will have to count on staying in the 4-year school for a bit over 2 years and then graduating in 2020. No problem!
@xraymancs Thank you for your advice. No, I was a freshman at a 4-year college. Something happened and now I can’t get adequate medical care at my old school so I have to transfer.
The advice does not change. I take it you need to take this semester off and then transfer either Fall 2016 or Fall 2017. The most important thing is to be well when you start again. In the big picture, whether you graduate in 2019 or 2020 or even later, is not a big deal.
