Yeah, so I got a 2100 but the individual test scores were:
math 670, reading 670 and writing 760. Are these good enough scores to be competitive at a low ivy e.g Penn or other top schools like G'town Washu or Northwestern? I have a 4.0 Valedictorian so far, won several awards and am on track team.

prolly not ivy league worthy if they dont count the writting if they do its barely

I think you may be right. What about the others?

why wouldn't they count the writing? You should try to get the score up if its possible... but you can't count yourself out for ivy leagues just cuz you feel as if your scores are mediocre. We all know that ivy league admission can be pretty random and its definitely based on more than just sat scores.

Stop Calling Penn A Low Ivy!

U Penn should not be discredited like that, but yes you could get into those schools with a 2100

hey, my dreams have been rekindled... penn seas hopeful 2130 :) 790 math :(

I know these aren't Ivy schools but I just got back from Lehigh and Lafayette and the admissions people said they're not even looking at the writing scores for the class of '10, so your score is basically out of 1600 again.

Let's look at it like this:

670 V & 670 M = 1340 SAT I + 760 SAT II Writing (equivilent)

Those scores are good enough for top schools. People need to realize that SAT scores are used minimally in college admissions. If you are in the ballpark score range, they don't look at them again.

A 4.0 and Valedictorian looks very good, so I wish you the best of luck.

stretch- did you go to the junior preview day at Lafayette?

you're #1 out of how many?

i wish i were valedictorian, but it seems like girls are just so much smarter than guys

i'm 4/398

What about later classes? I can see why they would ignore the Writing for the Class of 2010 because there's a mix of old and new SATs, but for every other class after that, everybody's going to take the new one.

Here's the real scoop. The writing section basically doesn't count for the class of 2010. HOWEVER, if it is particurally low, this will send warning signs to colleges. If it is especially high (in Road's case), this might draw a few oohs and awws, but generally won't count for very much. Having a high writing score can only help you. And yes, because of a different curve, the Writing section counts a lot less than a SAT II.

Beyond the class of 2010, the writing section will become more important, but probably not as important as the CR and Math.

Road, I would retake it for the CR and Math. A 1340 is marginal at the Ivies.

Why would the Writing section be considered any differently than the SAT II Writing from the Class of 2009?

For one thing, you're taking it in the middle of a 4 hour exam. The averages figure to be lower. Also, if you look at the MC curve for the March test, it is a lot more brutal than the SAT II MC. Essay graders also have more essays to grade. This affects the essay grades people receive. Scores gravitate toward the center (7 or 8).
These are probably the reasons why the section isn't being looked at that much, if at all. Bad for people who studied that buts off for the writing part.

yea, even the collegeboard states that the writing portion is too new to make too many considerations from. that's why they do not even give you a percentile for your score, and they also say that scores from the new SAT writing are not comparable with scores from the SAT II: Writing (from my mailed score report)

hmm...seems like that sick-to-my-stomache-feeling after i saw my 2070 was justified. :(

What's wrong with a 2070? Statistically, it is the same as a 2100. Depends on how your scores break down. 1400 equivalent on the first two sections is median for most of the highly selective schools.

Aflac!

I wish people would post their old-style scores (math+verbal) plus their writing scores instead of using the god damn 2400 system. I know, I'm being an ass because I never had to take the new test, but if you want our help, work with us. Do you write emails to your grandparents the way you email your friends?

In some order:
a)I am one of about 6 tied for #1/770
b)If they do not count the writing as part of the SAT I, why did they make the change?
c)If I had gotten a 1340/1600, that would never have been good enough for these places. The question is whether that is how the colleges are going to look at it now. Keep in mind that they do not look at the categories for the ACT. Perhaps they will do that with the new SAT? I do not know.
