27 ACT = bad?

Is a 27 ACT bad for tier 1 schools? I have a few tier 1 reach schools I'll be applying to. Should I cross them off my list since my ACT score is a little low? I've looked up the stats for some colleges and schools such as Penn, Columbia, and Cornell's middle 50% score range for the ACT is about 28-32. So I'm 1 point off it seems.

So anyway, is this score good enough? I was thinking about taking the SAT again to replace my ACT score, but I think I should take the SAT subject tests instead this December. Comments?

too low. but it never hurts to try.

TOO low? I guess I don't really understand what they mean by "middle 50%" then since I'm almost in the range for some tier 1 schools. Columbia, for example, has a middle 50% of 27-32...and I have a 27.

I think it depends on the rest of your stats and how good your personal statements are because there really is no such thing as a "bad" score. If the December ACT will still make the deadline for your schools, then I would suggest you retake it then after some studying because studying really pays off for the ACT!

If you haven't taken SAT II subject tests yet, then you definitely need to do them in December.

You should probably focus your time and energy into improving your scores for one test (ACT or SAT I) because trying to do both would be too much and you probably won't improve much on either test when your dedication is divided.

EISD,
If the middle 50% is 27-32, it means 25% got a 27 or below and 25% got a 32 or above. So if you are at the edge of or close to that range, you still have a chance. Be aware, though, that some of those in the bottom 25% of ACT scores may have higher SAT scores that were actually used for admission.

I agree with adzuki about studying for and retaking either the SAT I or ACT. If your ACT score is better than your SAT, I would try to improve on the ACT.

let me clarify. at a top tier school a 27 wont necessarily hurt you...but it definetely wont help.

take teh ACTs and SAT IIs in december. dont even bother with the SATs. becuase if you take the SATs, you cant take the SAT IIs becuase they are on the same day
