My ELP teacher, who is quite experienced in the admission process, says: Oh you'll be fine. 29 is NOT a bad score. Even when I mentioned MIT having a mid 50 of 31-34, she said. Ohhh I think you'll be fine. She mentions that MIT and those top schools have done things that has surprised her, etc.. But then, everyone on this site, including senior members, say that my ACT is too low.

Who's opinion should I trust?

In addition, not a lot of people on this site place a lot of emphasis on AP exams. On the flip side, my ELP teacher takes great heed when it comes to these tests. Again, who should I trust? (In my opinion, the AP tests reveal more)

A 29 isn't a bad score, but it probably won't get you into any of the ivies or MIT. I got a 29 the last time I took the ACT, and I am desperately trying to break the 30 point mark, but that's probably not gonna happen after taking that dreaded science section!

well I got 29 on science (not too bad). It was the reading and english sections that killed me. Since I'm going to be an engineer, it will hurt me less.

But any other opinion on the actual weight of standardized tests? (not including subject tests because they actually test useful info)

29 is a good score but not so good for MIT or ivies. Science is actually not the most important section even for MIT, math and English section are more important for many colleges. In fact, two engineering colleges consider only math and English and ignore science, reading, composite: Rose-Hulman and Gtech. And yes MIT and others do things that "surprise" people but it would not be a surprise unless out of the ordinary.

AP scores have little impact on admission; that you have taken AP classes and graded well does help.
