Has anyone who has already had a campus interview (maybe in the summer or more recently) been contacted for a local alumni interview? Just interested to know if that has happened?

Yes, this has happened to me. I had my campus interview today and I have an alumni interview next week

Anyone else…? I am still wondering if they offer the alumni interview even though a campus interview has been conducted? I would love to chat with an alumni too…the campus interview was great but a much younger person…a senior in college. getting an alumni perspective would be great…but Im not sure they would want to waste their time offering both if the interview season is busy.Any thoughts anyone?

Yes, I don’t know if it’s common, but my DS had an on-campus interview with a senior during the summer, and then an alumni interview after submitting his application.

DS enjoyed both interviews. What part they played in the admissions process is unclear. They did add to DS’s positive impressions of Yale, although they were of course far from the only thing that influenced his decision.

If you get one of these, it just means that there are alumni available and willing to interview students in your area. It doesn’t mean that you are a favored candidate. (Indeed, not getting an interview at all does not mean that you are a disfavored candidate.)

One of the more knowledgable members will correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that an interviewer must recuse themselves for the year if they have close ties (relative, for example) with someone applying. A friend of ours did not interview the year that their son was applying.

Sometimes random events bunch up, and there can be interviewer shortages one year even if there hadn’t been in prior years.

In general, a second, local alum interview will NOT be offered due to the paucity of available slots. Given the excess of RD applicants, a local ASC director would be rash to offer up a 2nd when there will likely be people who get zero.

I’m not saying they don’t happen – but they are rare and likely a mistaken allocation of resources. And I’ve not heard of one in my local ASC for a good ten years. Also, given a new portal, directors cannot easily assign a student who has a report already filed but would require IT assistance to create an exception. They’ve been rare – and will be even more rare now. @juniormathwiz: not a single person who has gotten on on-campus interview will be offered a 2nd, alumni interview from my ASC.

@ronandearth: as soon as your on-campus one gets filed, your profile will show this and don’t be surprised if your alumni interview gets cancelled. FYI.

IxnayBob you are right. Last year I had to recuse myself from interviewing because my D was applying SCEA. Once she was accepted and I no longer had a dog in the fight (since she claimed her spot immediately), I could do interviews for the RD applicants. I am once again doing interviews this year and had been assigned SCEA applicants.

Thanks everyone. This has put my mind at ease. I know 3 years ago of someone from my town who had both the on campus interview and alumnus interview and now realize that this is probably not the norm.
