So for a lot of schools the TAG requirement is 3.2 GPA, since a 3.2 guarantees you admission, wouldn't a 3.3 without a TAG also pretty much guarantee you in even for selective majors?
If not, could you explain why?

I don’t think so. TAG is a specific contract that you apply for and follow meticulously to the letter. I think the reason why they guarantee you admission with TAG is because of the contract requirements and the student following it. From what I know, they allocate space for TAG admissions first and then leftovers are for normal admissions.

I do believe that meeting or exceeding the TAG GPA gives you a good chance at admission to the school.

OP - As the above poster stated it’s a specific contract that you follow.

A 3.3 is in no way better than a 3.2 with a TAG.

I’d take a guarantee over a chance any day.

That said a 3.3 does make you more competitive overall and does not limit you to a specific campus.

A 3.3 does not guarantee anything you could get rejected everywhere even with a 3.3 GPA it’s a matter of how many students have done better and got admitted already, how many have TAG’d and how many seats are available.

A guarantee is the gold standard when it comes to getting into a UC, However there are some drawbacks:

TAG agreements can only be made with one UC (expect UCLA, UCB, and UCSD starting next year). for the schools that you can TAG certain high impacted majors are excluded.

Also TAG only guarantees admission, so if you want to get competitive scholarships having a higher GPA is always to to your advantage.

@Dagoberto - I agree with everything you said, but in this case (3.2-3.3) GPA I would say the only places that GPA is competitive is UCM, UCSB, UCSC, and UCR the other UC’s would not consider either of those competitive (unless you are taking a rare major like African American Studies or Russian Studies or something in which case still a 3.2 would be essentially the same as a 3.3 because it’s a smaller non-impacted major)

Now let’s say we are talking UCSD’s TAG for the current year, the minimum GPA is 3.5 but let’s say you don’t TAG and get a 3.6 instead then yeah I would take that any day of the week over a TAG because I’m essentially golden at 7 of the 9 UC’s and have a decent chance at the other two.

But the 3.2 with a TAG in my opinion is better because where can you get in with a 3.3 that you can’t with a 3.2?

What about UC Davis for Biosci?

I honestly don’t have the stats on that cause UCD chooses not to post them, but if your Gpa is below a 3.5 like stated above in this post I would take the 3.2 and TAG over a 3.3 and no TAG even for UCD Bioscience.

The 3.2 gets you the TAG 3.3 gets you a chance, it won’t get you in anywhere that a 3.2 wont in the UCs.
